Is it a mature, intelligent film or comic book action like Flyboys?

I thought "Flyboys" was such a wasted opportunity considering it was based on a true story and definitely aimed more at the kiddies market. Is this more of the same?

Khazi:

Since it's a German production it's probably gonna be much more serious & much less tongue in cheek---and probably pretty gloomy...

I hope not. Though no matter what I will still buy the movie. Could it really ever be that bad as flyboys ? Flyboys did have some nice scenes it and some decent actors. At least it was not as bad as 'Hells Angels' , that aweful rip-off of 'Wings', which in my opinion was pretty good.

On a personal note, when I rushed to see Flyboys when it was first released, an African-American gentleman was sitting two seats over from me. When that aweful scene came up when the white racsist pilot and the black pilot had their little talk the gentlman got up and left.

Flyboys is full of scenes that just want to make one cringe.

I do hope the Germans make a movie we all will not be embarrassed to watch.

"Flyboys" had huge potential but the immature approach for such an interesting and true story was a huge mistake by the Producer,Director. So few war films get made these days that I feel the comic book approach was totally unworthy and inapropriate here.Same problem with "Pearl Harbour" which is one of the dumbest film experiences I`ve ever had the misfortune to sit through. It`s a fine line to entertain and be accurate, intelligent and respectful, but filmakers need to focus on these certainly if they`re telling a true story.Leave the comic book stuff alone as there are a plethora of such films, many highly enjoyable:"Where Eagles Dare","Kelly`s Heroes","Dirty Dozen" etc.I`d recommend "Aces High"(1976),which is out on UK r2 dvd, for anyone who was disappointed with "Flyboys".

Looking forward to seeing The Red Baron but can`t find any uk dvd release schedule and don`t think it`s made it to the cinemas here yet.Maybe it`s been and gone-anyone know?

Aces High was very good, but I also enjoyed Fly Boys. Of course it was flawed as hell, but it had a nice feel to it. A bit old fashioned story-wise, but sometimes I like these "inspired by, but far from based on true events" war movies. As long as the movie itself is enjoyable.

I'm gonna watch Der Rote Baron tonight. I'm ready for a Pearl Harbor size dissapointment but who knows, I just might like it. :-)

This film is in a completely different league to Flyboys, which had nothing to recommend it but some exciting air scenes - the soap opera drama which filled what seemed like 24 hours of screen time, was excruciating. 'The Red Baron' is an adult film for adults; Flyboys should be left for the kids.

this film has much more depht and overall much better then flyboys. flyboys is just a typicall "american" war movie like peral harbro. i liked this film alot and i hate when good films gets mixed rewievs...

your "aweful" is my "why do they have to go PC on us and put a black guy in ever war movie?" The truth - something hollywood has never seen fit to follow anyway - is, black folks were not used for jobs of cunning, high intelligence or quick thinking positions. They were kitchen help, transportation (red ball express for example), etc.

U571 - the black guy ruined it for me. He was a steward - how the hell would he know how to drive a submarine?!??

Tuskegee Airmen - sure, there was a black squadron, and yes no bombers were lost under their protection. HOWEVER - the truth is, by the time they made the theater, all the good german pilots and planes were long gone. It was a turkey shoot IF they saw a plane.

You'll never see a token white guy in a remake of Roots or some african based movie, why must there be a black guy in a war picture, when there were no black people there in reality?

Flyboys was enjoyable ONLY when in the air. The rest of it could've been called "American Pie 6 - The early years"

There were a black fighter pilot in WW1. A Eugene Bullard. Which the character Eugene Skinner in the movie is loosely based on. Though he was not a member of Lafayette Escadrille as in the movie. Bullard was in Lafayette Flying Corps.

You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Bullard

So they have partially right.

I agree. While I wholeheartedly object to any sort of racism in the armed forces (or elsewhere, for that matter), you just end up ruining the feel of the film, if someone is as misplaced as the steward in U-571...

Forget the fact that he probably couldn't drive a submarine, but if any german ever caught the slightest glance of anything other than white sailors, mostly sporting large beards, they would raise the alarm... Even though there might have been black sailors, or even submariners in the US Navy, there CERTAINLY would not have been any in the Kriegsmarine!

I haven't seen Valkyrie yet, but if there are any black, asian or others in that one, I will walk out boo-ing!

Racism is despicable, but puritanism and political correctness end up ruining good movies.

Totally agree with your post Qpad.

BTW, I watched the movie this week and must say I was disappointed greatly. The romantic storyline ripped out the body of the movie. It wasn't needed, they didn't even know her name apparently. It was far too long, taking up at least half the movie and completely distracted from the military exploits of Richthofen which I thought the film was suppose to be mainly about. The dogfights were good but too few and the movie jumped all over the place so much that it felt like a mess. A wasted opportunity.

If it's anything like the god-awful mess of a film "Flyboys" I want nothing to do w/it, & w/ it's rating at 6.1/10 isn't a good sign, but I would still like to see it, if I ever get a chance. Where the heck is it? Anybody?

I don't know about the German navy, but I read a book about a U.S. submarine in WWII, which had two black mess stewards. One of these steward's battle station was usually at the helm in the conning tower, because under battle conditions he was the best helmsman on board.
