In my opinion this was the biggest Oscar snub...and what a great film

I just watched this film last week on DVD...AMAZING, just simply amazing. Everything from the acting to dialogue to scenary...everything was perfect. I dont see how the Academy didnt fit this film in with any of their awards.

I would have easily put Pierce ahead of Ledger and Howard (not putting those guys down because they were quite good), and definitely best original screenplay..why not any recognition?

So many things good about this film, for one, it's one of the best "buddy" movies I've seen in so long. Two, one of the few comedies that have captured my attention, and didnt need any "YOUR A VIRGIN! DUDE WE GOTTA GET YOU LAID! DUDE, WE GOTTA GET LAID AT THIS WEDDING!" *beep* this was a straight up comedy that doesnt need to attract 14 year olds. The whole switch from the beginning to the end was really emotional for me. The last 20 minutes was truly heart breaking, and heart warming at the same time...the cast and crew of this film did an UNBELIEVABLE job and just wow...what a film.

Saw this a few hours ago, and, yes,Brosnans performance is Oscar worthy,by turns predatory, pathetic, vivacious, haunted and always hypnotically believable.
Problem is,the Academy ignores certain genres of films-step forward SF, comedy, in favour of the meretricious we-take-ourselves-very-seriously ones.
My list of the unrewarded;Brosnan here,Philip Baker Hall in Secret Honour,Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice......

I really don't understand why the Academy passes up on certain genres. That really makes no sense at all to me. I know many comedies aren't Oscar worthy, but what about films like Heat? Heat is one of the finest cop movies ever made. The directing and everything is just perfect and not even one nomination!

I also felt that Pierce's performance was Oscar worthy...but of course he's not a gay cowboy!

I agree that Brosnan should have been nominated for an Academy Award, but he was nominated for a S.A.G. Award and his performance has been acknowledged in many quarters.

ur list is garbage, Crash has 3/5 wins and 4/5 nominations? That movie is over-rated to the max.

I agree that this was an Oscar winning movie, particularly Brosnon's performance. This is a very special film, too bad it has yet to gain a wider audience. Unfortunately, I do not feel a sanitized showing on television would do it justice.

The script should had been nominated.

The Matador certainly features some of Pierce Brosnan's best work.

Having said that there are always debates occurring over who got what, who missed out etc.

I wouldn't totally blame the Academy here.

It's usually up to the studio to get behind their film and promote it to Academy members front and centre.

To be fair I doubt whether that happpened with The Matador. I hadn't heard of it till recently. Was it ever even in the mix with Brokeback Mountain et al?

I thought of Brosnan as some cheesy 007 until I saw this.
Definitely my favorite movie he's ever been in.

Watch "Love is all you need" btw. It's good, not great, but very watchable.

You have no right to say what you're saying. As a middle-aged male who knows what kind of "buddy relationship" the two actors should have represented, what was portrayed had no resemblance of reality to any buddies I have or have seen anywhere in life. A killing partnership which is giggled away with jokes and hugs and a reward trip to Greece? Come on! Fine premise; let's ask the parents of Sandy Hook Elementary how reasonable a premise that is for a "fun, comical, buddy" kind of movie? Kill people, until you're targeted and then kill the one targeting you? If that's your idea of heart-warming, do stay away from my city.

So many things good about this film
Please recount. Brosnan did just ok. Kinnear was even worse. I will guarantee you, as quality men of pedigreed resume, they were both killing time and taking the checks, but suppressing considerable need to vomit while slaving away on this piece of tripe--you can see the strain on their faces throughout. The script was beneath both of them; they should have refused to read it. The whole movie is a confusion of tired studio tactics strung together to fill 2 hours, destined to be a cable TV perennial.

ledger was just brando 'reflections in a golden eye' with a cowboy hat

brosnan created a new genuinely strange character

and to see 007 play that !!!

wow

I agree the script could have been nominated and the movie itself, but I have seen better performances out of all of them.

Great Movie!! Not sure Oscar worthy? Both actors always do great work, Kinner is great and Brosnan great at these roles.
