This movie is one of those movies that seems to lack a gray area. You either loved it, or you hated it.

Most people seemed to love it. I am one of them. It was charming, funny, and just dark enough that it drew you in.

I can see not enjoying the film, but several people have called it "the worst movie I have ever seen."

Either those people never saw White Chicks or the Avengers, or they are the type of elitist that are never satisfied with anything short of a masterpiece, which they probably only consider 3 movies in history to be.

I loved it. I loved how everything kinda...I dunno...how it was filmed I guess. I was kinda taken aback when Brosnan said *beep* because I've never seen him in a movie where he cursed, but it was really good.

Apparently you didnt see Tailor of Panama.

Anyway, The Matador was pretty good. I hope Brosnan has a solid post-Bond movie career. I'm not saying his post-Bond movie career has to be like Sean Connerys but I hope its at least good.

I'm in the grey area. I liked it, especially the end, although I think they should have shown the final kill, but it definitely did drag on in the middle and then just get rushed to the end.

I gave it a 6/10 on IMDb.

This, for me, is one of the finest films I have seen in 10 years. Absolutley wonderful from beginning to end.I am shocked to see some of the negative feedback on here.
The film is a gem.

I'm in the grey area. I thought it was OK, I didn't love it, but didn't hate it. Though I know that my wife didn't like it. I just didn't buy why Danny would give Julian so many chances when they first met in the hotel bar and the next morning outside of the hotel lobby, Julian acted so creepy, I wouldn't have given him so many chances.

I will second your comment about the avengers. That is the only movie during which i walked out of the movie theatre. I stood up and jetted as soon as there were grateful dead bears running around the building. How does that get into any movie? By the way, I enjoyed The Matador, dark, funny, edgy. And I would prefer to watch this over most of the movies that I have seen in the last year or two.

I saw The Avengers and hated that, too. The Matador had pretty good acting, but the movie didn't draw me in. There was an interesting plot twist, but the movie had to mislead the audience in order for us to say "ohhhhh!" Wasn't very clever. The directing was bad, as the movie kept dragging. I don't know about you, but I personally like movies that keep a good pace. 1/10.

it is not funny, its so stupid,it has no plot and no point to it. I considered myself a connoisseur in
movies. Did somebody give Roger Ebert money for him to rate this a good movie???

it is 1000% AS STUPID AS "LOST IN TRANSLATION" They made fun of us, the moviegoers. How dare they make a mockery of us???
I have traveled over the globe, speak 5 languages, watched foreign movies, classics, you name them and trust me this is amateurish.

BTW "WHITE CHICKS" is so funny, i have watched it twice already.it is original, has a plot.

Wish I had read it the comments before wasting my 90 min.

Thanks Imbarne...that was one pompous balloon that definitely needed pricking.

Personally I loved the film. Brosnan is superb as a the seedy and distasteful Julian Noble. He clearly revels in the role. Great soundtrack too.
Whilst I can see that The Matador wouldn't be to everyone's tastes; a little too offbeat for some, and far to non-PC for other sensitive types, I can't really understand the 'love it' or 'hate it' dichotomy that seems to have arisen. Even if The Matador wasn't my cup of tea, I can think of a whole raft of films that I definitely would be far more pissed about having spent 1½ hours of my valuable time watching.
Mind you, if 'White Chicks' is where we are now setting the cultural bar, it's not suprising then that everything else is a challenge...And what the *beep* has White Chicks got to do with this film? They're not even the same type of film - a case of comparing apples and pears?

Wow, I'm pretty sure you're joking, but if you're not, you are the biggest assclown I've ever seen. Granted, this movie is no "Mickey Blue Eyes" but I think it's fantastic. I like how your foreign movies are only ones that are from the American mainstream. You *beep* hack!

He was a co-producer I think. I doubdt he did it for the money.
Regardless, I think it is a great film. He is an excellent actor and that role is one of his best.

Consider the phrase "should've stick to playing 007...". Brosnan branched out a little and won a lot of critical praise. I thought he did a fantastic job and loved the film, but if you go in looking or hoping for a Cubby Broccoli Fest --you probably aren't going to be too happy with THE MATADOR.

Apparentley the initial poster is missing what I and many others like to call a sense of humour. I thought this movie was great. Apparentley the initial poster missed the commercials when the movie came out and bought into the dvd-vhs release rehype trying to make it seem like an action flick. There is action but barely. It is mainly a great comedy.

Original poster, you are aware that it wasn't Brosnan's choice to stop playing 007, right? He got dropped in favor of someone younger.

That said, it's nice to see him play a role that's NOT 007. It's been a while and it is refreshing to see him try something that's new yet also a bit familiar.

I thought it was great. But with the forgived casual killing, pedophile like sex, and bi-sexual references through out, my friends conservative parents hated it. Maybe it's not for those types...

I forgot to pay the poltergeist so I got repossesed!

The film was more a satire and a metaphor for two opposite people having what the other needs to help the other. So, it's more a realationship film than not.

It's not an action film.

Having worked with criminals, I thought the dialogue was great. Some of the comments that Julien made about man-boys and sex were right on target, and I must say just as humorous as in reality.

Yea, you can find all of those people on "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" board.

Anyway, I loved this movie. I'm fine with you stating your opinion that you didn't like it. But come on, this movie is far from "worst movie ever".

Check out "Manos, the Hands of Fate", "Glen or Glenda", or "Robot Monster" (I personally love Robot Monster).

Great movie, i agree it had some unique and clever jokes, but what stuck out for me more was the message it sent and the great character development.
After reading some of the other threads however i realize that a lot of people didnt like the amount of sexual content, and i can understand how it could ruin the movie for them.
It was a refreshing movie to watch, after a long string disappointing movie rentals.

i agree completly, i saw this movie yesterday and thought it was horrible. i know that going on here most people will disagree, but it pissed me off when they would go to kill someone and it wouldnt show them die. it was about a hitman but didnt have any killing. it was kinda funny i guess, but it really wasnt a good movie. i dont get how they can just suddenly switch from being like, yeah so were gonna kill him and the next scene being like hes dead now. if their gonna kill someone i want to see it.

This film was stagnant. There was very little character growth for Brosnan. Almost zero character growth for Kinnear and his wife character. The story went nowhere and it did so quietly. The Matador was not that funny, frankly. It was a good concept, but they failed in the execution.

I'm not surprised that some people thought this movie was funny. There are a lot of people who think movies like Click and Princess Diary are hilarious. Goes to show that some people will laugh at anything.

Before I go into anything I want to say, Princess Diary is hilarious, it is a classic!

Character growth? Do you mean character development or are you referring to characters not changing throughout the movie? I thought the characters were well developed and consistent, but the development was very subtle. As for character growth, people don't always change, and so it actually makes the movie more realistic if all the characters don't change a great deal. Although Brosnan changed quite a bit in my opinion.

The movie has lots of dry humor and charm, and although you did not apreciate it, I think you are a little close minded to think that because you don't get it, it's not funny.

I don't get how the movie went nowhere...not enough explosions???

I thought Matador was pretty average. I mean it entertained me, but I'm really just not a Greg Kinnear fan. I don't find him funny AT ALL. There's like 15 comedic actors that would have really done a lot better job with that role and been a lot funnier. Brosnan was good I thought. To me, the movie just had no real purpose. It's not really a comedy and it's definitely not an action movie and it's not really a drama either. Frankly when I rented it I was expecting Brosnan's character to be very funny and he didn't come through.

I tottaly agree with the original poster.

This movie sucked. Big time sucked.

It was a very real style movie. What i mean is that it paralled real life very much. The problem with that is that we watch movies to be entertained. We aren't intrested in a real life depiction unless it's dramatized. This movie wasn't. It sucked because there were so many different threads going on that the main plot was sortov lost. It was like putting a bunch of short films together. It could have been hundreds of times better.

And B; most people who watched this movie were looking for a fast paced action comedy, and what they got was a slow paced kind-ov' funny, deep(maybe) intresting movie.

It sucked as a Action Comedy, But was a pretty good Drama Comedy.

And it went very slow(the plot development, if there was any at all).

So, you wanna say it was good?
No way

Not even

Worth renting?
Not really

Not really worth the bandwith

I just felt like copying and pasting a line from a poster who hated this film:

'if their gonna kill someone i want to see it.'

Now - opinions are opinions BUT - that is a ridiculous statement to make. Surely the fact that the character was losing his ability to kill is at least behind part of the reson for not showing it (amongst other things I hasten to add - budget, time, anything!)

If they're gonna rape someone I wanna see it.

Oh, loved this film. EXACTLY my kinda film!

I loved this film. Pierce Bronsan perfectly played man on the fringe of sanity, who's job of killing people has driven him to the edge of reality, and thus indulges in debauchery and sleaze. I loved the way you were left guessing, did Danny participate in the killing in MC, or did he have the competition knocked off. Finally, did he pull the trigger for Julian at the race track?????
