I haven't seen MWTSB yet, but I have seen AA.

I love Bruce's work, but AA wasn't good at all. I'd watch it on Sci-Fi before you decide to invest some good hard money into something that's as big of a stinker as Alien Apocalypse. The only redeeming thing about this film was Bruce. The story was horrible and the acting of everyone else was even worse. The aliens in AA looked like bad video game villians.

Oh well, it's too late and I'm too tired to give a very cohesive review about such a suck a$$ film.

Later,
Laz

The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last

reply

After I saw the "I'm spartacus" scene in AA I turned the channel as soon as possible.

The only good thing about it is Bruce, he's always good.

Thanks 4 sharing your opinions guys!

I have no access 2 sci-fi channel so i cant c 4 myself AA and MWTSB.so does anyone know where i can download a trailer from the web 4 any of those 2 pictures???
thanks in advance,
D.

AA was bad. Really bad. Not even "funny" bad.

I actually laughed out loud (something I rarely do, even during comedies) a couple of times during Man with the Screaming Brain, I couldn't even stand 5 minutes of Alien Apocalypse. I think someone already mentioned it but the aliens in AA look like they came out of a 10 year old PC game.

"After I saw the "I'm spartacus" scene in AA I turned the channel as soon as possible.

I actually liked the 'I'm Spartacus' line.

reply

Pretty much... Bruce was actually good in Alien Apocalypse, but it wasn't nearly his best role. But, it was nice seeing Bruce in a starring role at the same time too.

reply

Yeah, Alien Apocalypse was pretty terrible and un-funny--though it had one redeeming moment. Bruce Campbell has a great one liner that goes something like...

Bad Guy: [Gets shot by Bruce Campbell and clutches wound] But you're a doctor! You're supposed to help people!
Bruce Campbell: I am. You're stupidity is terminal, and now you're cured.

Doesn't really do it justice in text...

reply

I love Bruce but to be honest both were pretty bad MWTSB was better and i would say was average but failed as a comedy alien apocalypse was terrible.

reply

That's like saying "Would you rather have sex or get teeth pulled"

Man With the Screaming Brain hands down.

reply

This movie, although not a masterpiece, is very entertaining and a must for any Bruce Campbell fan. Alien Apocolypse however...

...

I forced myself to sit through it. I watched it because Bruce was in it and because Josh Becker directed it, but it was god awful. I kept sitting there hoping it would get better, but it just kept getting worse and worse. From the hackneyed dialogue to the unsynched dubbing to the horrible special effects, it's a bomb.

Rent it first.

I saw Alien Apocalypse on Sci-Fi several months ago and it was SO memorable that earlier "tonight" when I was doing my usual Saturday night check of what's coming up on the Sci-Fi channel with using the "Guide" function on my cable box, I had to do an INFO and see that it starred Bruce Campbell and Renee O'Connor and what the story was about before I even remembered it.

Man with the Screaming Brain, on the other hand, I WON'T forget :)

As most others said in the reviews posted primarily by folks who saw this movie at book signings (PROVING, once and for all, that as I've long suspected, "Sci-Fi Original Picture" simply means the movie didn't get good enough test-audience reviews to find major theater distribution), this movie is A HOOT! A few REALLY HATED IT; a few were disappointed. But most thought it was either good or great and got a good share of laughs out of it, as did I.

And as I was watching, I was already wondering about a DVD, and whether it will be in the low-price range, in which case I may make it among the few I buy, as my favorite Sci-Fi/horror movies usually tend to be the comedic and/or campy ones (anyone here ever see "Terrorvision?") That's one of my faves, but it was BARELY available on tape and I don't think it's ever come out on DVD... When and if it does, I'll buy it (not a Bruce Campbell film, but a very good campy, Sci-Fi/horror movie starring Gerrit Graham, Mary Woronov, Burt Remsen and a couple of other familiar faces.

Not having seen all the Evil Dead films (I saw the last one, and parts of the others, I THINK), and not having seen many other BC films other than AA, I can't say I'm a BIG BC fan... YET, but I think I'm heading that direction and am now inclined to go rent "Bubba Ho Tep," too, lol.

At any rate, if your choice is between buying "Man with the Screaming Brain" or just watching "Alien Apocalypse" for free on TV, and you can NEVER watch AA if you buy MWTSB, BUY MWTSB.

Happy Viewing!
Jeff

They both actually the same as far as budget (really low),
both kinda same as far as story (despite unoriginal plots),
but I like Alien Apocalypse a bit more , it had more
action, a bit more jokes and definitely more gore, Man with
the Screaming Brain relied more on the usual gags that you've
seen a thousand times before. I am surprised I watched it the
whole way through but they were some good laughs.

"PROVING, once and for all, that as I've long suspected, "Sci-Fi Original Picture" simply means the movie didn't get good enough test-audience reviews to find major theater distribution"

That's actually incorrect. Sci-Fi contracted with Franklin-Waterman Productions to make this film exclusively for them, and fronted them approximately $750,000, in exchange for broadcast premiere rights. (Plus, they basically handed Bruce and his script to them.) FWP in turn spent approx. 1.5 million on this, and will make the rest of their profit from the dvd sales and rentals (as well as rerun residuals.)

However, unlike other Sci-Fi pics, this one was directed by a best-selling author and popular actor who makes personal appearances across the country all the time anyway. So Bruce arranged to have special preview screenings of the film in conjunction with his book tour. They were always one-shot screenings, where he was present, at indie and art-house theatres.

There were no test audiences.

There was no effort at finding major theatre distribution.

(Bruce probably physically had the copy of the movie in his suitcase when he arrived.)

Your theory actually wasn't entirely without merit - *SOME* Sci-Fi "originals" were made for big screen release - "Man-Thing" in particular, and "Dog Soldiers" (which actually was released on the big screen in the UK.) Most up 'til a few years ago were actually made for direct-to-video release. But that's nothing new - ABC made a mint airing "premieres" of Disney animated films and Olsen Twin moves that were originally direct-to-video.

However, most of Sci-Fi's Sat. night creature features now are made specifically for them, with the arrangement described above.

SO - "Brain" doesn't *prove* anything. Sadly, you had your conclusion in mind first, then worked backwards to find "proof."

Here's another vote for Man with the Screaming Brain.
Truth be told, I only saw the last half of Alien Apocalypse but dang... it was bad. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but it did inspire some laughs by me at least. But MWTSB was much funnier and overall a funner film to watch. Also, I think Bruce performed better in MWTSB and the film's got Ted, who was great. 'Nuff said, I believe...

Save your money & avoid both on DVD. I'm one of the few who liked Alien Apocalypse better. It was so ridiculous it was entertaining. Man With The Screaming Brain wasn't anywhere near as over the top as I thought it would be.

MWTSB was funny, though kind of *beep* ed up. A new twist on those cheesy old black-and-white horror and sci-fi films of the 50s. Worth watching. AA was crap. Do not watch AA. Most of the acting, except maybe Bruce Campbell, was entirely wooden, and the CGI was really crappy. After seeing this movie, I found the definition of bad CGI.

I post here because I have nothing better to do with my worthless life.

thanks everyone for their comments.
Your opinions helped me a great deal.
I had the chance 2 read MWTSB the 4-issue comic(a friend gave them 2 me)and downloaded the MWTSB tv trailer at the Sci-Fi channel website.
Almost all of u liked "man" better.Keeping that in mind and having read the comics and saw the trailer i pre-ordered it!It seems like a lot of fun-as all of u mentioned-with the physical comedy that made bruce known-Evil Dead2 is my favorite movie of all time(along bubba ho-tep)mainly because of the physical comedy bruce does in that movie(among other things:like the direction of sam raimi etc.)!
I'll propably buy Alien Apocalypse(maybe against my better judgement)because it seems some of u liked the movie and cause i'm a huge bruce campbell fan(i cant help it).hey,It cant be worse than terminal invasion(which i really hated it)can it???(but thats a question 4 another thread:)
THANKS for sharing your opinions guys & girls,
many many thanks,
D.
ps1:i cant wait for october 4th 2 c the films.I'll be leaving my own reviews here then..:)
ps2:forgive my bad english

AA by far. Ted Raimi made Screaming brain unwatchable. AA atleast has some good campbell lines.

While I cannot give an opinion on "MWTSB" 'cause I have never seen it, I can tell you that AA made me doubt my own loyalty to Bruce. I spent two weeks excited by the fact that AA would be on so I got my friends together on a Saturday to watch it. We had some time to kill so we watched Law and Order before the show. That was the highlight of the evening. As soon as the title came on the screen I knew it would be bad. After gritting our teeth for two hours we came to one conclusion. The best thing about the movie is that they killed the worst actress I have ever seen in the first two minutes of the movie. This womans acting makes Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb of G4's X-play show look like classically trained performers. If you don't know who I am talking about that is ok. If you do, then you can accuratly guage my reaction to this movie. I can only hope that when I finally see "MWTSB" I can atleast not cry because it is so bad.

reply

AA was just a big, steaming, pile of crap. I watched the whole thing waiting for it to be funny...don't watch it under any circumstances.

I haven't yet watched MWTSB...but its saved on my DVR...
