Am I the only one who found it incredibly creepy when Max started an impromptu song and dance number with the little girl, wrapping his arms around her and such?
It just screamed PEDOPHILE to me.

I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but as I recall Max is supposed to be an angel or some other non-human being. Why, then, would his dancing with and hugging a little girl cause you to think he's a pedophile?

Actually, I know the answer to my question: we have been inundated with that kind of stereotyping in the media for so many years that we have been trained to think that if an adult shows affection for a child not his/her own, they MUST be some sort of a pervert. Unless he actually touched her in an inappropriate manner, which I don't recall happening in this family-friendly movie, there's no reason to think there was anything other than caring and affection in the scene.

Isn't it sad that we no longer look for the best in people, but for the worst?

We have John Walsh & Dr. Drew Pinsky to thank for this. Between the two of them, they seem to think everyone but themselves is a pedophile. Everytime I hear people talk about how many children are obese because they spend most of their time sitting in front of a pc or a video game console instead of playing outside, I think "Thank you John Walsh" Kids do need to be careful, but I just think he's unnecessarily scared a lot of kids & their parents into staying inside where it's safe. Dr. Drew may be even worse. When he was on "Loveline" on MTV about 10 years ago or so, he seemed to think every caller was a victim of some type of abuse. You could even say he badgered a few of them into admitting abuse that they were at first adamant never happened. One night Bill Maher was a guest & after about the 4th consecutive caller that Dr. Drew swore was an abuse victim, he turned to Dr. Drew & said "What. Do you get some sort of finders fee or something?" I thought it was hilarious but apparently Dr. Drew didn't because Bill Maher is the only Loveline guest I know of who wasn't on at least twice.

Dude,

If you walked into a room and saw an old man dancing around and hugging a kid that he was no relation to, your first thought wouldn't be that it was sweet and innocent. It would seem inappropriate and creepy, and John Walsh has nothing to do with it.
And if you don't think so, just try and go up to some random kid in the mall some day and just even try to hold their hand. Let me know how the court hearing goes.

But in this movie that is not the case. THis man is some sort of an angel, not some strange man

reply

Oh yes, that's right. The little girl and the people working there all know he's an angel and accept that as normal and sining and dancing with angels who work as janitors happens everyday.
Hi there. I'm from earth.

To J.: I guess that's why department store Santas are so unpopular with children AND parents :))

reply

No, dude. Department store Santa's still do ok, but there's probably plenty of parents who wouldn't feel comfortable leaving their kid alone with whoever is behind the beard. Besides that, chances are the guys who get these jobs generally go through a little more of a background check than a couple decades ago. It's just how things are. People just didn't give certain things as much thought in the past.
Speaking of that, I'm not sure if you are old enough to remember, but years ago on The Price is Right if you guessed the price exactly during your bid from contestant's row, when you got to the stage you reached into Bob Barkers pants pocket to get your bonus hundred dollars. Bizarre to think of it now, but would you like to have strangers reaching around in the front pocket of your dress pants? Of course, I don't know - you might enjoy it.

To quote Hitchcock, "It's only a movie." Live with it.
