Why did Hank run away?

He had survivor's guilt since he was the only member of his ladder crew to make it out of that fire alive. He felt horrible that so many people died (3 fellow firemen & 24 kids) & even though he saved that kid who later turned out to be the photographer & even though he had a family that loved him, the guilt overwhelmed him & he turned to drinking & gambling & left to escape everyone.
