GhostWatcher reviews

Hey, this is Dave Cross, the writer/director of GhostWatcher. I just wanted to thank everyone who has posted a review or thought or comment about the film. I think I've found that people are definitely divided on it, you either really like it or hate it with a passion (and it looks like some people REALLY hate this film). Anyway, it's always good to hear good and bad so we can do better next time. So, if you hated the movie, sorry you wasted your money, and if you liked it, I can promise you that the sequel will be ten times as good.

This film was more than decent...some nifty thrills and genuinely scary moments.

I really enjoyed Jennifer Servary and her character. I thought the DVD box was a bit misleading...I never really viewed her as a scam artist--she was just making money and said so outright. There's something intriguing about a goth, sex-performer P.I. That has to be a first. Servary filled the shoes well.

SPOILER
My only complaint would be the scene involving the stabbing that was cut. I kinda figured before even watching the deleted scene that something must have been cut. Without that scene I felt rather cheated--I'm glad I got to catch it on the DVD.

I rented this film, and because of the negative reviews, I almost didn't watch it. It was due back to the video store today, so this morning, since I didn't have to go to work, I popped it into the DVD player just out of curiosity. I'm glad I did. It was much better than I expected, and the story really kept me interested. I have to agree with the person who said the acting improved as the film went on - that was the only major flaw I could find, but I think the actors redeemed themselves as the story unfolded. I commend you Mr. Cross for making a very interesting film on what I'm sure was a limited budget, and also for your professionalism on these boards. Even when some people obviously want to tear this film apart, you have maintained a very kind and humble attitude. Best of luck with your next project!

It was cheesy but not as bad as other movies I've seen. And it did seem to get better as the movie went along. I thought the scene with the ghost in the kitchen (when he was crawling around and eventually came right up in her face) was great! I loved that scene it was so creepy.

Was wondering how you got this distributed into blockbuster? Was it a distribution company that did it for you or did you sell it to them yourself?
I'm facinated that a digital movie was distributed!!! Oh yeah and all the people that hated it can't say they have a movie on blockbuster shelves!

Mr Cross,

I am curious as to what budget you were working on with this film. It does in fact look like you did this on MiniDV, I should know, as I did a lot of film work with it in my undergraduate days at UNC-Chapel Hill. In fact, the film itself reminded me a lot of the college films we did, and the tv episodes we made for the horror serieses RAVE and Darkness Falls for UNC Student Television (our campus television station that also was beamed out to Chapel Hill).

Anyways, I was really curious what your budget was, where you got your actors, who handled your distribution, and if you are looking for actors or crew for future films. I could definitely fill the bill for you, as I have many friends that are extremely talented and experienced in filmmaking, myself included. Feel free to email me sometime at [email protected] as I would love to hear your views on those matters.

Wow, I feel even worse for this director than I did before I found out that he posted his own review for his own movie.

Don't try to protect your movie from bad reviewers, you get what you get. You have absolutely no talent for making movies! In fact, I am going to film a remake of this and it will probably be 10 times better than this film.

I don't know why you decided to market this in the first place. Only good movies are allowed on my video store shelf.

And please spare me the agony! Do NOT make another GhostWatcher film.

Dave,

I wouldn't really worry too much about what little 15 year old Taylor Caldwell has to say about your movie.

After all - YOU are the guy who got a movie distributed by Lions Gate!
Congrats on that, and keep on truckin.

How's the movie doing? I see that it's EVERYWHERE!

I'm biased, since I worked with Jillian, and my co-workers bugged me to see it.. but I thought it was badass. Can't wait for the sequel.

Wow, what an awful film. This was recommended by a Blockbuster employee who was probably the director. To call the script amateurish is a compliment. It has so many holes, you can dive a truck through it. The actors (obviously friends of the director) clearly have never seen the light of an acting class. In fact, the only scary thing about this movie is the acting. I work in the entertainment industry and was checking IMDB to see who the casting director is so I could call him/her and chastise them for this abomination. But wait...there isn't a credited casting director. I've seen student films that provoke more thought than this boring tripe. Lion's Gate is known for distributing rubbish but this takes the cake. Even the "gag" reel suffers. It isn't even a gag reel. It's outtakes of untalented actors getting upset with themselves because they can't act. Thanks for sharing how unprofessional and without merit the cast and crew are! The music sounds like the blips and bleeps my Atari game system used to spit out in the 80's. The metal songs are "yarly" and dated. I will say that the film is consistent...consistent at being awful in every aspect. Thankfully, Blockbuster gave me my money back (you may not be so lucky). This film makes Battlefield Earth look like Citizen Kane. Complete utter garbage.

I usually scan the video store looking for horror movies that are most likely shot on d.v. I have two reasons for doing this: 1. I am in the process of making a film on D.V. and I want to see If I can surpass the quality often displayed in low budget filmaking. 2.I love to see how God awful most of the crap out there is. When I rented Ghost Watcher I had the following thought." This looks like it will be a nice steaming heap." followed by "Damn, I'm going to have to watch this twice due to the fact that the movie has director's commentary." (Heh, even If the movie is bad, you can always learn what not to do.)
I must admit, I actually liked this movie. Given the limited budget, and the fact that every idea out there has been played to the hilt, I was very surprised. The gag reel was also most amusing as was the other features. I wouldn't give it a 10 but it was definitly not a waste of a trip to the video store. Good job David A Cross

Wow, well said. Keep on making movies, and keep the sh*t talking alive.

You like to defend yourself so I'll do so myself. I do not load cameras or get coffee for anyone. In fact, I don't even work on a set and would never want to(althought I've stepped onto many sets as an observer). I do, however, represent talent for film and television so I thought my opinion was a valid one. I apologize for striking a nerve and coming here to give my two cents. But isn't that what boards are for? I'm sure you will continue to make films and continue to get reviews, both good and bad. My advice is if you keep putting yourself out there creatively, you may want to develop a thicker skin so you don't feel that you have to attack everyone on a message board that gives you a negative review. After all, Peter Jackson's first film "Bad Taste" wasn't exactly a critic's fave.

Seriously folks, jealousy is one thing but this is ridiculous.

I checked out the websites of some of these people who are trashing the movie and it seems to me that they are all wannabes who are just pissed bacause someone did what they want to do. And who is this Taylor Caldwell jizzball? He's a little punk who should go play with his action figures (he probably puts them up his butt)

Ghostwatcher is the greatest movie ever made.

I thought that was a great movie! I almost turned it off when that creepy guy was crawling on the girls floor during the lightning storm - it scared me! :)

Great Job David Cross! Looking forward to the sequel!!!

My son prewatched "Ghost Watcher" before me and didn't really like it but as a viewer of bad movies I felt obligated to watch it. For the first part of the movie I was more lethargic than anything watching it. The movie did pick up the pace tho and I even got my wife to come over and watch it also. Looking past the faults that will definetly be obvious in a low budget film as this I saw that this was more entertaining than many, even higher budgeted films. A couple of scenes even made me flinch, which is hard to accomplish, and I even had to pry my wifes hands off of her face to make her watch laura kiss malculm's blue lips.
The directors cut with the flatulence and the females looks was worth it. I was laying on my wifes lap crying, I was laughing so hard.
Congratulations on doing what the rest of us wish we had the time, and ability to do and that's make a movie!!!

David,
I have to say that Ghostwatcher was not a fav of mine but it was very interesting and I think you did the best job you could. Making independent films is a pain, budgets are tight, and permits are expensive. Some times you turn to late night shoots to get around the permits and hope the cops don't come by or you get the girls to use their charms to make a security guard turn their heads the other way. It's fun, it 's crazy, and it's a lot of hard work. As you can see I have some experience in this. => I have worked on short films mostly not only as a Producer but also as a Casting Director, picking talent for a project is not an easy task but again I think you found some great raw talent. I came across this film becuase of Jennifer Servary, she worked in the same production office I did for about a year and we became pretty good friends. While trying to develop a horror short for my independent team she told me about Ghostwatcher and got me a copy of it to view. I have to agree that the begining is very slow and I found the apartment bare, like an undressed set. It's a little boring but once you brought in Jen's colorful character things got better. I enjoyed the thrill of it and the locations were great, that barn was perfect. I was thrilled to hear about Lions Gate picking it up for distribution, you've done some very hard work and deserve to reap some rewards. I am looking forward to Ghostwatcher 2, and I hope to see a horror cliche in it with the return of Jennifer's character. =>

I was actually ready to give this thing a really bad review until I turned on the director's commentary. At this point I realized why the acting was so badly done that my 13 year and I could have made this movie. However, in that light, and with the rather humorous commentary, I was actually able to somewhat enjoy the movie. It's still not a good exibition of acting or writing, but when viewed as an amateur film with friends obviously doing the acting, then it's not all that terrible. As someone else pointed out (I believe a family member of one of the actresses), I've seen worse. (Open Water, for one)

reply

I just rented this movie today and I thought it was pretty good. I love horror movies! I have to agree with the other person who said that this one was definitely better than Open Water was.

One thing that my friend and I noticed, and this could just be personal opinion, was that Jennifer Servary looked too young to be playing the part of her character. Now before people start ripping me apart, I am NOT saying that her acting skills weren't good, I thought she did an excellent job. I just thought that she looked like a high schooler! Seeing her carrying a gun and exploring scary places all alone at night looked strange for someone as young as she looks (or is?). I would have expected an older character to have played this part.

I don't know why people are complaining about the actresses! I liked all three of the main characters. They were normal looking girls, unlike some of the actresses in other horror movies that look like sickly skeletons on a stick. This is a good thing because it made the movie seem more realistic. And best of all, they weren't wimpy, whiney, and/or stupid like many female characters in other horror movies I have seen. In other words, I didn't feel the desire to jump through the screen and murder one of the characters all thru the movie because she was being so annoying. I thought all three girls did a good job, cut them some slack! This is probably the first movie that they have ever been in.

Overall I really enjoyed this movie. It had a great storyline and held my attention. I didn't think the beginning boring, I was too busy trying to figure out exactly what was going on. Good job! I would definitely see the sequel. =)
