one of, if not THE Best

The IMBD Reviewer's opinion is:

"Suffice it to say that this is one of, if not THE Best of the current crop of French films, and that, as we know, is saying something. 8/10".

What would some of the other ones (current crop of french films) be? By current, do you mean, for example, "à ma soeur", "irréversible",
"romance", "intimacy"? How does this one compare to these? Is it as, um "realistic" as these ones? (By that I mean very graphic depictions of sex and/or violence).

Actually, it doesn't suffice just to say it. You need to justify your opinion. I thought the movie was pretty stupid. The plot was ridiculously unbelievable. The audience I saw it with (New York City) laughed out loud at some of the dumber passages. Darrroussin was the only bright spot. His performance was very good.

I give it a 10/10. It's one of the best films I've seen this year. It's just a superb telling of the gradual unfolding of a story, or a situation whichever you prefer. The lead who played Antoine Denon (I forget his name now, the husband) was terrific, had a sort of Billy Bob Thornton quality (all his best qualities, the subtle ones). I loved the mood and the pacing, how they set up the first act in the car, then in the second act with the guy on his 'binge'. Then the twists come and it's done with patience. This is the kind of film I WISH Hollywood was making.

On my god, he looked just like Billy Bob, and I said the same thing.

This was an ok movie. It was a little slow, and it wasn't really a "thriller" like the movie poster said it was.

I agree. It is a fab film and it is Billy Bobish (a la The Man who wasn't there - without the smoking)

God, it's a great movie. Sure the plot's a mess but who cares whewn its this good.

reply

heh i don't think hollywood will ever make such films..
but to tell you the truth i suppose that after watching sum US films we can say for sure that this film is REAL good :)

"This wasn't really a thriller?" are you out of your mind. This was probably the best thriller I have seen in years. The film was exceptional. It had me captivated from the word go. Just wanting to know what was going to happen just like a great book. If this was a book (and I know it was originally) its a serious page turner!!!

Red Lights (Feux Rouges) was indeed and EXCELLENT adult-oriented pyschological thriller and morality play. Loaded with symbolism, great acting, and moody atmosphere, this film is certainly one of the BEST French films I've seen in 2005. 9 out of 10 rating is appropriate.
