Strongholds

I assume that you are referring to the areas where Gate Captains are located, and the message that pops up when a character kills a Gate Captain (i.e. Sun Jian has sealed an enemy stronghold). Strongholds are areas where additionaly enemy or allied troops enter the game from. If you kill off the Gate Captain at a particular stronghold, then no reinforcements can come out of that stronghold. Strongholds simply serve as the entry point for fresh troops, either enemy or allied, depending on if it is your opponents stronghold or one of your own. Does this help?
