Bamford / Ellingham: what's in a name?

Does anyone know why Doc Martin's surname was changed between the films and the TV series?

If you could see what I've seen with your eyes!

reply

Copyright reasons, mainly, but really, Bamford and Ellingham (i.e. the Sky Movies/Saving Grace "Doc" and the ITV "Doc") are essentially two totally different characters with significantly different back-stories. The only real thing they have in common (apart from being portrayed by Mr. Clunes) is that each has left a successful job in London to take over as the town doctor in a Cornish fishing village.

Can anyone help please, I desparately need to get a copy of this movie, just cant find it. I live in South Africa and would pay for shipping anything please help?

reply

You had better make it clear which movie you're after! "Saving Grace" or "Doc Martin" (Bamford), which is distinct from "Doc Martin" the TV series!

Do you know how I can get a copy of Doc Martin - The film - as opposed to the Tv series.
I want them both if possible, the first one and the legend of the clootie. Saving Grace is easy to get but the films are hard to get hold of any ideas anyone.

Chris.

Netflix.

You're right. Dr Bamford and Dr Ellingham are two entirely different people. Bamford is friendly and outgoing, drinks pints at the pub, smokes cigarettes and pot, and gives sweets to his patients. Just the opposite of Dr Ellingham.

The character as Bamford is so far more agreeable and interesting imo. Wish the character had stayed the way initially concieved. Oh well....

One other thing: the surname Ellingham is an anagram of Minghella. Dominic Minghella (brother of film director Anthony) was the creator of the TV series.

I think what happened was this film called Saving Grace Which was written by Scottish television host, stand-up comedian, writer, and actor Craig Ferguson and stared Craig Ferguson Brenda Blethyn Leslie Phillips Tristan Sturrock. Martin Clunes had a small part in this film as Dr Martin Bamford. The film was about Grace Trevethyn played by Brenda Blethyn who's husband dies and leave her with no money and all these bills to pay so she and her gardener played by Craig Ferguson decided to grow drugs in her garden shed. The film was set in Port Isaac Cornwall. The film never really got shown at the cinam around the world but was a hit on DVD. The film is kind of like Waking Ned.
A few year after that film was made Martin Clues and Sky Pictuers decide to make a prequel to Saving Greace Called Doc Martin which tells the story of Martin Clunes character Dr Martin Bamford and the months leading up to the Saving Grace story. The main characters from Saving Grace have now gone from Doc Martin and all the suport actors most now main characters are back plus a few new one's. Some time after that film they decide to make a third film in the series called Doc Martin and the Legened of the Cloutie. They plan to make a fourth film in the series but then Sky Pictures gose bust and Martin Clunes decideds to sell the idea to ITV1 as a TV series. ITV tell him to keep the story but change all the characters So Martin Bamford is now Martin Ellingham and gone are all the Characters from the 3 films and Martin Clunes is the only Actor from the 3 films now in this series. They even change the name of Port Isaac where they still film the series. The series is now not meant to be anything to do with the 3 films but the story for the series is kind of the same and they also called it Doc Matin which is a shame as it is not really aything to do with those 3 films. It is kind of a remake of the Doc Martin/Saving Garace films. I just wish that they had been able to take the Saving Grace/Doc Martin film series to another TV station or production company and have made a fourth film and not have remade the 3 great films into a not so good TV series.

Thanks for the informative reply.

Can anyone comment as to the quality of the 2 TV movies or Saving Grace as opposed to the ITV Series (now approaching its 4th season). I like the ITV series and am wondering if it is worth going "back in time" so to speak, to check out [the alternative time line]. I wouldn't say I'm a rabid Doc Martin fan but I am a completist, I suppose.

@jamiesonsam

Thank you for your run-down of the situation. I was very confused when I saw 'Doc Martin: The Movie'. I like the Doc Martin from the movie. While I like the Doc Martin series - I can resonate to what you are saying when you describe the series as a 'not so good TV series'. The movie Doc Martin character is far more interesting and palatable than the TV series Doc Martin character imo. I wonder why they changed the character.

Thanks for the illuminating explanation for the early version of Doc Martin! I was quite confused (thinking it was a pilot) by his hugely different personality. I read somewhere that it was Clunes' idea to make the doctor so anti-social and even nasty. Not sure why...was "House M.D." airing at the time? They're very similar.

Still, there were elements of the later Doc Ellingham in this film; the scene in which he is about to trach that guy who is choking; when the fisherman asks what he's doing wielding a knife, he replies, "I'm gonna stab him in the neck!"! Then not long afterward, the hilarious scene of him chasing the "Phantom", getting slammed by a jelly and tackling the whacko on the beach. Priceless!

Who was that gorgeous dark-haired woman who sang? She seemed like a guest singer.

Now I'll have to see "Saving Grace" as well, since I like both Craig Ferguson and Brenda Blethyn.

I recently read on another board here that Ferguson has just discovered another great British show that recently made it to the US: "Foyle's War".

Ellingham is an anagram of Minghella, the name of the guy who created the series.

reply

Good thing the creator of the series wasn't named Rasehole.

His personality changed, too. He smoked and drank alcohol. The only thing that's the same is his first name. Oh, and his specialty changed, too, he's a obstetrician in the movie and surgeon in the show.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

Some PBS stations show Doc Martin the series, then also show the movies every so often. During pledge drives, they often give copies of the Movies in exchange for pledges.

I prefer the Martin character of the series; the one in the movies isn't nearly as provocative or complex.

Even though I love the movies, especially the first one, I agree with you here:

Definitely. It was Clunes' idea to make Martin more interesting and create more tension by having him become more abrasive. It really does make for more interesting stories, with Martin always at odds with the locals, though many of them (like Bert Large and PC Penhale) ignoring his gruffness and befriending him anyway.

Don't get me wrong...
It might be unbelievable,
But let's not say so long

It was the people at ITV who Martin Clues sold the show to that said they liked the idea of this show but they wanted to make a few changes to the show which meant making the Doctor into a grumpy Doctor. It was not Martin Clues that made the changes.

reply

I'm just going by what was said by Clunes and his wife, the producer, Philippa Braithwaite, on one of the many specials about the show. Not sure why they would say it was Clunes' idea if that's not true. Maybe he stated ITV's wishes in a way that sounded like it was his idea?

I followed all the rules...and you followed none of them. And they all loved you more.

reply

I am looking forward to tracking the films down and see Dr Martin's "previous" incarnation. I think the tv series is great and it would be interesting to see how it started.

reply

They're worth seeing. It's fascinating to see all the transitions.
