Anyone been punched for looking at someone?

Remember the scene where "the man" gets punched for looking at a kid in passing? Has this ever happened to anyone? I liked the scene and thought it seemed realistic. Thoughts?

reply

Yes, its realistic. In certain parts in certain cities you must always be careful to not "look at someone the wrong way." And wrong way could just mean making eye contact. There are punks out there who will want to throw down or at least verbally assault people for doing so.

reply

never happened to me but I've been jumped for no particular reason other than being in the wrong side of the neighborhood.

In certain parts of Detroit it's advisable to avoid breathing.

Yep, i went to high school in manhattan and used to take the subway from the bronx everyday. Once I happened to glance over to some hoodlum and when I exited the train he punched the back of my head. I then turned around, smiled, and said "is that all you got?"

reply

You know, that whole business about not making eye contact is exactly the advice given when encountering certain dogs and wild animals! Hmm... kinda creepy, isn't it.

Alcohol feeds the furnace, but it does not maintain the equipment.

Just say hello. They will think you're a cop or just crazy.

reply

Not when you're dressed as a yuppie in da hood.

Punishment is not always the most effective treatment for people, there will always be elements in society that can be better, but if we teach better, peopl will feel better and have less reason to resort to behavior that requires prison and hterefore we will have less of a need for more prisons, punching someone for looking at you is not logical, and probably not something prison could fix

reply

In fact, punishment is almost entirely ineffective at shaping behavior (ask any parent).

The way to shape behavior is immediate positive reinforcement of desirable actions.

All punishment does is make other feel better, because they enjoy seeing "bad" people suffer.

I haven't seen someone get knocked out, but I was with my roommate when she eyeballed someone and was spit on. My roommate who teaches at a local college in brooklyn was on the sub and decided to make eye contact (our thought was that she was clearly being singled out for being the white girl in the deep deep mostly carib brooklyn neighborhood) with someone who did not want it, he eyeballed her back and walked up to her and spit on her and exit the train. We were both so shocked and it seems that a few people on the train felt that she asked for it by 'eyeballing' the guy. She claims that she was just checking him out because he was so different looking (the guy was a caramel brown guy with green eyes and a huge blowout--dressed in the thug uniform of today.

She wanted to get off the train and tell the cops, but I figured you can't really lock someone up for spitting a lugee at you. Also I figured it would have been hard to explain our theory of the attack considering that I probably stick out as much as she does eventhough I'm black.

>> Makes no sense. Not funny.

I think it was a sarcastic attempt at expressing doubt at "comfortably_numb.."'s comment about beating up some thugs. Comparing his story to what is a known fable (fiction) Little Red Riding Hood. I thought it made sense and it was funny but there is no reason to doubt comfortably_numbs story.

I had a similar experience. I was in a rough part of town when I saw five very large men harassing an elderly woman and what looked to be her granddaughter. These thugs tripped the elderly woman, who was around 70, and kicked her back down every time she tried to get back up. When they turned their attention to the young girl (about 5 years old) I HAD to step in. Those thugs made a very bad mistake that day …I’m a BLACKBELT.

Although I pray daily that I won’t have to use my hands and feet for the deadly weapons they have been trained to be, in this case, I felt it was justified. As all five thugs were left utterly destroyed and begging for mercy, I know they learned a valuable lesson that day…don’t tangle with a BLACKBELT!
