perhaps, he did it out of sympathy? like a metaphor, he was left alone in a cruel unjust world, as the dog was left the same way at the empty house.

One possibility was that Bicke went over to his ex-wife's house planning to kill her and possibly their children. When nobody was home, the only target he could find for his frustration and rage at a broken family life was the dog.

he was definitely there to kill. a lot of these retarded losers often feel the need to kill people around them because in his minds, their continued existence without him would be unbearable. to him, this is putting them out of their misery.

selfishness arrises from lack of imagination. lack of imagination=stupidity=sam byck and people like him are retards. got it?

These types always (well not always but often) shoot the family and the family pets, it's their way of making a final deletion on their life from this world, sometimes it's out of love because they don't want their family to be hurt by their suicide so they kill them quickly first. Sometimes it's out of malice because the relationship has broken down and they exact revenge in this way, "If I can't live neither will you".

I'm glad you asked this because after finishing this awful film, it was the only question my husband and I had. I looked up the real Sam Byck on wikipedia and there was no mention of him killing his dog on that site. Does this mean it was just a Hollywwod thing? Possibly. I don't know for sure. But in the long run, the only answer to the question why does a crazy person do anything is in the question. The crazy thing about crazy people is they do crazy things. Actually, I take back my statement that this is an awful film. It's a film about an awful man which is different.

The family was gone, the dog was alone and Sam knew he was going to die. He wanted to make sure the dog wouldn't have to suffer from neglect.

Sam's disturbing line of taught:

1. Life is pain. End the suffering of those you care for.
2. Not being alone in the final act of suicide.

The dog represented his old life, the life he had with his wife and kids when he still lived in the house..... I think he killed the dog to help allow him to sever his attachment to that old life.
