If jerome wanted to be good
why did he just steal the serial killers pictures? unless it was just a boost for popularity, it just seemed weird to me that he would just put that guys pictures up.

Because he couldn't copy the style.
Jerome didn't have that much experience or pain in his life.
Watch the scene when jerome is drunk and "the serial killer" explains he doesn't care if he lives or dies so he gave up on being a famous artist and everything a pretentious artist thinks about.
He says he is actually "having fun" (painting). He let go, and ultimately thats what an artist has to do to become great(stop thinking about becoming great)
Jerome is just not at that level, thus not being able to copy the style much like how Jerome's teacher was talking about singing with someone else's vocal cords. You can't cram that much life into a freshman in art school in the 22 weeks of the 1st semester.
So he stole the paintings, because ultimatly Jerome's character is lost.
