Any GOOD movies about the 'art world'/art schools?

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions at all. I'd greatly appreciate it. I've seen Ghost World, but I'm wondering if there are any other similar movies out there.

Sounds like you didn't enjoy this one much? I thought it was pretty funny. Loved the satire on the postmodern crap that passes for art these days.

Alas, good movies about art are rare, because everyone seems to have way over the top romantic notions about what it is like to be an artist, so such movies tend to be full of passionate, tortured souls struggling to find 'inspiration.'

In actual fact, artists are just normal folks who make pictures. This of course has limited dramatic entertainment value. My favourite films about artists are usually the little documentaries you get along with movies on DVD, especially of course science fiction and fantasy movies, in which they sometimes give you a glimpse of the creative process.

I'd like to see more stuff like that too, but the closest thing I can think of would be artist biopics and documentaries. I enjoyed "Painting With Fire", a documentary film about Frank Frazetta.

CASHBACK is great. Check it out. Lots of nudity too. Haha.

Here are some that I enjoy, that have relevance to the modern art world.

Basquiat - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115632/
Great Expectations(modern version) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119223/

Savage Messiah (1972), by Ken Russell: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069225/

It's the true story of the brilliant but impoverished young World War I era French sculptor Henri Gaudier. The guy lives in squalor in a filthy dark abandoned part of the city's subway tunnels, but finds joy in the creation of his artwork.

"A Bucket of Blood"

B-movie, one of Roger Corman's best, satire of art (specifically beatnik) culture, also another film about an artist/murderer.

Yeah, I'm so bad I kick my own ass twice a day.
-Creeper, the Hamburger Pimp from "Dolemite"

BUCKET OF BLOOD is awesome.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS, most definitely.

"Live on, love all, and let live" - River Phoenix.

Yes, there is the unforgettable "Camille Claudel", featuring GĂ©rard Depardieu and Isabelle Adjani. About her relationship with Rodin. (French with subtitles.) Heavy, dramatic work with top notch acting.

And I enjoyed Art School Confidential a lot too! Good mix of funny and dark moments, in my opinion. And like Jerome, I think the world of Sophia Myles! (Ever since she stole my heart in the the more mediocre "Tristan & Isolde".)

Others have listed some good titles. I would add 'Vincent & Theo', 'I Shot Andy Warhol' and 'American Splendor'. And Zwigof's 'Crumb'. Not so much about art school - just good movies about artists (the Warhol movie depicts the scene well, but is actually about the deranged feminist who tried to kill him - but, like Basquiat, it was incredibly evocative of the era portrayed).

I can't imagine a film about the contemporary art school experience that didn't make fun of itself. I liked that it showed art school pretentiousness as laughably loathsome as well as nearly unavoidable for the unexpecting freshman.
