That and really bad timing. Even though it came three years after September 11, people had a hard time dealing with a Middle Eastern character not shown as a terrorist.
I really think that if Omid Djalili had toned down some of his own schtick, it might have had a fighting chance. But to her credit, Whoopi wouldn't let him, and she fought the network tooth and nail.
The reason "Whoopi" failed was because NBC wouldn't let her make the kind of show she wanted to make, because that probably would have gotten a TV-MA rating. It's ridiculous how we have this rating system that ended up jacking up the prices of TV sets because of the V-Chip, and we still have censorship, all because some people are too lazy to take responsibility for themselves.
