Why was Whoppi canceled

I can't understand why Whoppi canceled. It's the best show that NBC had on their schedule for Tuesday night lineup. They keep stupid reality shows and cancel stuff that's really great. How can we get Whoppi back on the air???

reply

i think it was canceled cause it was so controversial

reply

No. It was canceled due to her comments about president Bush which was considered "apalling" and with this being on NBC, and after the Dan Rather thing, they had to stop the show.

reply

I loved the show. I'd buy it on DVD.

reply

What did she say about President Bush that was so appalling? Whatever it was, she's certainly not the only one who has spoke negatively about him. What a stupid reason to cancel her show! For the most part, I don't care for the sit-coms of today, but this was one in a million. I so looked forward to it each week. IMO, it was even better than 'All in the Family'.

reply

I think that it was canceled because it sucked and not enough people watched it.

It was cancelled for the same reason any show is cancelled - because the ratings were poor.

Why would the network keep this show on, when a show with higher ratings can occupy the same time slot.

I am amazed that people still don't grasp why shows get cancelled.

your onw comment unknowingly reveals the truth. the networks see a show, like sat the orginal star trek. it has good ratings. then another show comes along. the the show laugh in. they specualte that laugh in would do better than star trek su the axe star trek and put laugh in on. laughg was very succesful but never equal star trek. many shows ended this way. and some shows have very high ratings but get canceled. like in the heat of the night was canceled by one station and it had high ratings. so it was picked up by another. unfortatly this don't always happen like star trek interprise's case.

kmg don't talk if you don't know what your talking about.

Ironically, I think this show was mistimed and would do great with all it's politics now, two years later. Madonna suffered the same fate with her album, 'American Life'. I think Whoopi got the "Dixie Chicks" treatment by ABC, which is too bad, because it was great, especially Rita, who I had pegged for an Emmy nod.

reply

The show was not great, but it was watchable, and frequently had some very big laughs. Its main problem was the writing: like a lot of sitcoms that have come and gone, the episodes relied on too many one-liners and not enough narrative. "Whoopi" was moving in the right direction when it was cancelled; it's too bad NBC didn't give it a chance. IMO, everyone in the cast was fantastic, and Ms. Regen should have scored an Emmy nod. She chewed through every line she ever spoke on that show.

"Whoopi" also suffered because it was so in-your-face and politically incorrect. It definitely turned many people off, and surely incited more than a few tons of conservative hate mail. As a liberal, I found it *delicious*.

I think that is the problem with the execs being controlled by uber-conservatives. So when can the world be run by liberals? Wouldn't it be better this way?

And now we all know everything anyone said about Bush was/is true.

it was a complete episode of her insulting Bush but not only Bush. Republicans in general. And how disappointed she was that her brother was a black republican.

I'm human and I need to be loved.

That and really bad timing. Even though it came three years after September 11, people had a hard time dealing with a Middle Eastern character not shown as a terrorist.

I really think that if Omid Djalili had toned down some of his own schtick, it might have had a fighting chance. But to her credit, Whoopi wouldn't let him, and she fought the network tooth and nail.

The reason "Whoopi" failed was because NBC wouldn't let her make the kind of show she wanted to make, because that probably would have gotten a TV-MA rating. It's ridiculous how we have this rating system that ended up jacking up the prices of TV sets because of the V-Chip, and we still have censorship, all because some people are too lazy to take responsibility for themselves.

Just because you liked it doesn't mean that it had impressive ratings. Unless, of course, you are a network executive.

There is a God and his name is Billy Joel.

There's alot of shows out there that had poor ratings in the beginnning but lasted years (i.e. cheers, seinfeld). <

Those shows were good and showed promise. Whoopi's did not.

you just proved everyone else's point.

"Just because she dissed the president they had to cut it off."

"Mad TV has parody's of the president ALL THE TIME and so do other shows and I dont see them rushing to cancel them"

Mad TV gets better ratings. More people watch Mad TV, don't they?
That's why Mad TV is still on the air and Whoopi is NOT.
You're retarded.

Yeah it was a good show. I love Whoopi, I wish I got her radio show here.

It was funny. I wish it would've lasted longer.

I'm glad Obama won, but I will not jump on the Pro-Choice bandwagon

though i do love The Biggest Loser.. Whoopi and the Tracy Morgan show was the most entertaining Tuesday lineup NBC's ever had. unfortunately they couldn't compete with American Idol at the time, so instead of moving to another day of the week, they decided to cancel both shows.
