eva for ADHD 13 year olds

No depth, no horror. Standard issue, gutless writing.

Pretty much take eva, cut off its balls, and then merge it with the matrix.

Nice way of putting it matey! lol

I think you are right actually.
I think the Rahxephon boys looked at Eva, was perplexed by the whole concept and decided to make a more straight forward version.

Me I don't care. As my review says. I love both. lol

Reminds me more of Final Fantasy VIII.

reply

Exactly. Actually, I don't think how anyone could consider RahXephon a masterpiece. It's good, yes, but it can't be a masterpiece. What they did was take the concept of Eva, which IS a masterpiece, change the things that people complained about, and that way they would win all the people that hated Eva because of those things. It's that a really hard thing to do?

The thing is that because it's trying to be so much like Eva, it ends up being kinda boring, it totally feels like a rip-off. Besides, I did prefer the way Eva was done anyways. The thing of answering all the questions and leaving everything clear, without room for speculation, seems to me more suited for "dumber" audiences...sorry for using that word, but it's true. I prefer a lot more the abstract clues given in Eva to make the audience understand it, because that is what I consider art.

reply

Nice! lol

Fair enough. I agree with almost all points given. It just seems strange to me the hate it's received. I still think it's a very good show. (And now that it's been mentioned, it does seem to have elements of FFVIII in it...nice also)

'Dumber' does seem a like harsh on RahXephon. I love both shows and yes, EVA is the better of the 2. But some people do love this show for it's more transparent nature. (Whilst finding EVA too Complex and psychological)

For me, it's a question of mood to which I tune in to. But if both shows were on at the same time and I had to choose it would be EVA. (Even if I've seen it about 30 odd times! lol)

Bison:Hello captain, are you ready to give me that heart transplant you mentioned?

reply

Yes, I like RahXephon too, I really do. But I think that since it's more straightforward, it's just for audiences less wanting to think.

I used the word "dumber" simply because I couldn't find a right word to describe an audience who just likes to have everything explained and know all the conclusions just by watching the show. Of course, RahXephon makes you think too, but not in the same level of Eva, which leaves you wondering what could have happened after the end.

Anyways, using the word "dumber" was also cause of my limited English vocabulary, so I apologize if I used the word wrong. English isn't my first language and I'm still learning... : /

This thread is like a pissing contest for fanboys. EVA and Xephon are nothing alike. Don't turn 2 amazing animes into "My Eva could beat your Dolem" piss up's.

"God is Dead and no-one cares"

reply

I think they are alike matey. But I suppose you can always find similarities in anime shows. Since most of them are trying to out do each other using familiar concepts. (The example of this can be seen with Noir and Najica. Or Ninja Scholl and Ninja Resurrection)
Like you say and I said before. I love them both and both are Amazing! I couldn't choose which is the better as a whole.

rjxsapri17...sorry I wasn't having a go at your English. I knew what you meant and by the by..if English isn't your first language. Then you're doing great I'd say! lol

SPOILERS AHEAD! In a big way

You should watch the series first, if you've only seen the movie. Otherwise you're missing out.

"-Does a Mu combine with a human to make a Mu-man (clever, isn't it) and a Dolem at the same time?"

The way I see it you have two kinds of Mulians in the world:
- Full mulians who arrived with blue blood. I think Maya, Quon and Bahbem might be the only ones.
- Mulians that pass over from the other dimension. They need a human that's turned into a sub-mulian, and are bound to a dolem, kind of like a trinity. Or maybe the sub-mulian wasn't human to start with? Maybe Hiroko Asahina's blood was really blue in the first episode?

"-Ayato. WTF is he? Is he really the son of eyepatch dude and Quon? And he's twin brothers with scientist dude?"

Yup. Though I think Maya carried him in her womb and gave birth to him, the DNA came from Quon and eyepatch dude. Think "Friends" and "Star Wars" and everything...

"-Why were all the pilots of the final attack things clones of D man?"

Because they are clones of the old man Bähbem who came many generations ago. He passes his conciousness from clone to clone. That's why he looks the same as the painting. But his clones - the D type - weren't good enough to actually tune. They had to wait for Maya and Quon for that I think. So the Ds are the Foundation's clone troopers.

"-So this is all the plan of some super intelligent thing that takes people's bodies (Miang from Xenogears style) and it's in crazy blond bitch woman in the story."

That's the old guy, yes. He takes Helena, but usually he takes younger clones of himself.

"-What the hell is the problem with girl that wants (and stabs) scientist dude?

She freaks out a lot. Crazy blond woman calls her version (random number here). Huh?"

Sayoko Nanamori? Ah, was she a clone too, or brainwashed? I want to see this again!

"-What's with the life module on Quon?"

It's telemetry (monitoring), communication with headquarters, and sort of an anchor that's supposed to keep her out of the hands of the Mu maybe....

"-Who IS Quon? I know she's uber old and is some sort of genetic model or something. Why does Mu leader lady call her sister?"

They both arrived at the shrine some years ago, and I don't think they're that old. General belief is that they actually ARE sisters, perhaps twins. Quon appears younger because she slept in hibernation for a long time, while Maya was awake and became too old to tune.

(Note: Update: Maya doesn't have a clone anyway. My mistake....)

"-So Mishima is actually Haruka?"

Yes indeed. Haruka was called Mishima, but then became Haruka *beep* Reika/Ixtli isn't really Haruka, but is the face of Xephon, taking on the shape of Haruka.

"-Why does Ayato get so pissed at Mishima for a little bit and then decide he's not pissed at her anymore?"

Towards the end? When he slashes the painting and stops the RahXephon system? He doesn't want to go along with this tuning business I think. But then, after the stuff that happens, he decides to take fate into his hands. Or something....

wait just a sec, are you trying to point out that matrix is actually bad?!

reply

I kinda agree with the OP, but I do think this series has depth. It just caters itself to the masses, and it basically ends up being like every other "mecha anime." It also has more action, which might cater to the idiots. But you never know.

Are too many to name. Too many!

But the show does have it's pluses with the glorious (though 90% digital) animation and the nice music. But it's a sorely shallow experience. Made all the worse by the grandstanding as INTELLIGENT ART.

Talk bad what you want about Evangelion, at least it's able to ask questions about humanity and make you think. Rahxephon just tells a rather banal story behind pretty pictures.

It's only 1 but a key problem I had with this show was how much of a pimp Ayato was. Here's a faux-artist who really has no redeeming features except he gets thrust into this saving the world scenario. And because of this he seems to become a chick magnet. An undeserved chick magnet which is always a fatal flaw in the world of anime (had Shinji tapped Asuka would fans be calling him a wuss?).

I'm gonna skip most of the women romances (of which there are many) and go straight to the worst one- the rewriting of Misato Katsuragi into a crying weakling. In Eva, Misato may have had her emotional problems and been troubled on the inside but damn it, she was her own women. Here we have Haruka who's physically a copy of Misato in so many ways and at first, she's a badass. She's a strong woman who can live for herself and while she isn't against love, she doesn't need a man to give purpose to her life. Alas, as the lonely anime fans want, she's really in love with Ayato and all she wants is for him to hold her. Her whole life has been built around this one man and the hopes that he'll take her back. Her life doesn't have it's own purpose, she's been living to gain the gratification of a man. A man who doesn't have to do much to win her affection and as the show progresses this once "on the surface" strong willed woman becomes more and more needy, literally crying twice every freaking episode.
Here, Rahxephon has taken the Misato archetype and just rewritten it so she's nothing more than another of those sad pathetic women in a Harem Show. She has no will or dreams of her own aside from being the subservient house wench to some prima-donna faux-artist.

It's a sham of a storyline and romance and just enforces sick ideals in the anime fan that they encourage. At least in EOE, Misato had the upper hand and used her sexuality to encourage Shinji to go out and fight. A stupid move on her part but a highly logical choice and one that showed she cared for more than just her own pleasures.

P.S. I'm a man.
There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

You really are being an ass about this.
Ayato is much more likeable than Shinji.
Shinji is a complete wreck and is depressing as they come. He's so un-likeable, we only feel pity for him.
NGE had a raw intensity that Rahxephon lacks but I prefer good character development and more realistic reactions from characters (ala Rahxephon).
Also it's not the mind trip that NGE is but that doesn't mean it's brainless. At least the symbolism means something, whereas in NGE it's there mainly to look cool. I enjoy both shows but for different reasons.
I'm enjoy Rahxephon more (from what I've seen so far).
NGE is good but not as wonderfully original as many people make it out to be.
Also Rahxephon is heavily influence by NGE (as well as old classic anime) on a superficial level but the stories are worlds apart.
So take a breather and realise they both have their merits.

I have watched about 13 episodes (i forget exactly how many), and stopped watching somewhere between a lack of interest or coherency. I do have to agree with the Evangelion rip offs with this. I am not saying they didn't have original ideas, and I haven't finished it, so I don't know what they are going to say or do (when I get around to finishing it, maybe my opinion will change).

But, what's mainly turned me off from it is the blatant direct borrowings, not references, from Evangelion. They throw in mystery and intriguing plot changes and twists, seemingly, because it was cool in Eva. Mysterious people say stuff like "everything is going according to plan" or "everything is on schedule," and there's even some schizophrenic, eerie piano dotting around in battle sequences, which seems heavily influenced by Shiro Sagisu's score of Eva.

I mean, I'm not saying they don't have their own ideas, or that the show lacks merit; I guess heavy borrowing of a previous work of ART, that seems to me more original or done with more intention, bothers me.

I guess I can't deny Evangelion borrows a lot from western culture and religion and mixes it with some of their own ideas . . . such as the crosses, and Judo-Christian Kaballah stuff. Perhaps what bothers me is not so much that Rahxephon's borrowing anything, but how they use it. It's almost like they are trying to create meaning out of chaos, or out of a lot of disparate ideas, symbols, and things. (my opinion on some of Mamoru Oshii's later works, such as GITS 2: Innocence, or Avalon, but that's a separate topic) I like to think that there is meaning behind it, but some work just seems to be complex for complexity's sake - to throw a bunch of interesting stuff out there and let people derive meanings from the complexity. I prefer some intended direction for that complexity.

I guess I should stop speculating and finish watching Rahxepho.
