I may be being thick but y did the murderer kill the woman he threw off the building?

if you mean the first episode of the second series, then it was all a plan to make the police think the bloke that got squashed was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. So infact the women was the murder weapon.

I got the impression that there was also a very strong indication of jealousy re: the dead girl's relationship with the teacher.
