At first I didn't understand. Then I remembered most who watch this show don't understand comedy. He's an actual judge, and critiques those who need critiquing and gives compliments to those who deserve it. You can tell it means something when the comic goes silent and just says wow.
Of course you can have a baboon like Roseanne just screech at how funny your hat is or something.
I completely agree. However I have no problem with Roseanne. But to say Norm is not a good judge is just wrong. He does a brilliant job. He knows what he is talking about.
I like the way he dissects the jokes and gives practical advice about what word to put in or take out etc. You can tell he is paying attention and knows what he's talking about.
I was actually happy when Norm was there because he is very smart when it comes to comedy, he knows what he is talking about and isn't Rosanne where everyone that comes out "I liked what you said you were really good" "it was funny don't listen to them" and so on.
Hilarious. I just started a thread completely disagreeing with this post. No disrespect man, I just see it differently I think. Here read this thread when you get a second and let me know more of your opinion:
I think he does a good job. He tries to help them out by giving real critiques and suggestions. Unlike the other 2 who say pretty much the same things over and over. But I will say, occasionally, I don't know what he's talking about. Like with the last guy. He agreed he had the best set, but he didn't like it. What does that even mean?
If being a good judge means rambling like a lunatic, offering conflicting advice, and being a hypocrite, then yes, Norm is awesome. Lets keep in mind Norm was fired from SNL for being too offensive, and the his two headlining movies bombed at the box office. But Norm he gets offended by the Harry Potter joke because it conflicts with facts. But the very next comedian, Norm tell him: comedy is truthful but it doesn't have to be factual. Which is it Norm?! Like Art, Comedy is subjective, and if Norm does not like you, then in his opinion you should abandon comedy. Say what you want about the other two judges, they both actually had successful careers, and I doubt they are doing this for the money, unlike Norm. I put this in another post and honestly believe this, if you wanted to bring out a really funny comedian that would really offend Norm, bring out 1997 Norm.
Norm was offended by the Harry Potter joke because it insulted his religious beliefs. It's funny how some people can make fun of anyone and everything, but if someone makes a joke about something near and dear to them, it's offensive. Norm's not the only comedian that reacts that way.
I haven't seen Norm tell any of the contestants that they should abandon comedy (and some of them really should have been told that). He's just honestly critiquing their stand-up performance...you know, something a judge might do.
A lot of what the judges say is lost to editing, just like a lot of the stand-up material is. We see it in an hour (40 minutes without commercials), but the taping of one episode probably takes many hours. I wish they would make these into two-hour shows, cut out all of the background and "behind the scenes" filler material, and actually show the stand-up performances in their entirety followed by the entire critique sessions. And it's not like NBC has anything better to put on the air than another hour of Last Comic Standing.
The Harry Potter joke was poorly written because it's well known and super obvious that Harry is a Christ figure, ie must choose to die to save his friends from Voldy, who is basically the physical embodiment of sin, blah blah blah. In other words, you're not really schooling the annoying Bible quoting Christion when you quote a book about a Christ like figure partially inspired by the Bible back to them. It showed that the guy probably didn't know much about Harry Potter although in the punchline he basically drew a comparison between his Potterhead-ish-ness to the fanaticism of the Christian dude. This doesn't contradict the truthful/factual thing because Norm's saying write what you know but it's okay to tweak your story a little to make it funnier.
..then I'm gonna Macarena because if we all just line dance think how much better off we'd be ~DPool
I have exactly the opposite read. Every one of Norm's suggestions is less funny than the original joke. Tonight's correction of the NAACP joke was itself a joke. That joke was funny, and him playing the serious card and getting 'offended' was laughable, especially right after he compared the black comic to Tracy Morgan.
Notice how Norm only compares black comics to OTHER black comics, even if their styles are vastly different? Pffffft. Dirty work was....kinda funny, I guess. Weekend update was alright. I don't see how this guy is regarded as a comedy god, he's really only KINDA funny, and that was in his prime.
Disagree with his criticisms, but Norm's comedic standing is indisputable. The stand-ups, his podcast, and yes a lot of his work on SNL. Guy his one of my top 5 comedians but aside from that opinion, the guy's earned his place in the comedy world without a doubt, for a variety of reasons
Man, all of these judges are being a bit more positive than most of the sets call for. I wouldn't even remotely call anything Norm has said as harsh. Check out this thread I just started, I'd love to hear your opinion when you get a second if you don't mind responding to it:
