What the heck???

Ok I live in a family of 4. If we all ate like she did minus the booze it would cost us about $160. That is just the bill alone. We are also not bad tippers we will leave you 10% of the total of the bill (of course our bill isnt $7. More like $40 or $50, so we are leaving you a tip of $5.00) not a dollar. What about the hotel she stays in or the places she goes when she isnt eating? So really the title of the show completely defeats the purpose of the show. Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels is better. Anybody else agree???

the $40 is only for food and really it is a vacation and shes showing good prices and stuff although she is a bad tipper for a vacation $40 for food isnt bad at all

reply

Uhhhhh, I thought this was OBVIOUS, but 10% is being a bad tipper. You should be leaving a minimum of 15%, and you should leave MORE than that if you get anything above average service.

And to add:
If the service is bad -- they get NOTHING.
I'm not shy about that.

omg I would never give a waiter/waitress absoulutly nothing. People like you who have never worked in the food business shouldn't be allowed past the front door of a restaurant. You can always tell when someone has never worked in the food industry, they're the ones with the most disrespect for others in restaurants

How come people think they are God and have to tell people "Ive worked in the food buisness" Who gives a crap. I tip very well and if a waiter or waitress does a horrible job and sits there and talks to other waiters or waitresses and slacks off, well too bad,why should I have to tip. What is this crap now, you HAVE to tip even if the service is horrible because its the food service buisness?? Give me a freakin break. I've seen gas pump attendants work harder than some waiters and waitresses. Tipping those slackers makes u look like an idiot throwing away your money on someone who doesnt care about your service at the restaurant. Tip well to the ones who DO their job and when you get someone who completely ignores you or sits and talks to other waiters, well u dont have to leave a tip just because someone who "worked in the food buisness" says you have to. Ridiculous. You have to work hard for tips, they are not automatic. Whats the point of them, then??????????????

I've never worked in the restaurant biz in my life, but I tip well (as I've said before) with 15% being the minimum. YES, I have wanted to tip 0 at times, but I realize that most of the time, these tips are shared with the bar, bussers and sometimes cooks. If my drinks and food are good, why penalize the whole crew? Twice in my life so far, after having a server so bad and/or high on drugs, I've left no tip at the table. BOTH times, I approached the bar and the bussers and tipped them BOTH cash personally. It's amazing how many freebies and comps I've gotten at both places since. Oh yeah, both servers no longer work at these establishments. I guess the old phrase "don't shoot the messenger" applies directly opposite in these cases.

PS to the poster: 10% is an embarrassing tip, whether or not your bill is $300.00 and you think "wow, well shucks, that 30 bucks is a good dadgum tip, ain't it buford?" or not. If you can't afford the PROPER tip, then go roast a pig in your backyard pit while you soup up your Trans-Am, and the kids swim in the above ground pool next to the other Trans-Am that's up on blocks with high grass growing around it. Maybe you could stash a little of that unemployment check next to your spit-toon so you'sa can have a fancy-shmancy, yee-haw meal once in awhile!

Can't find your unemployment check? Silly you, it's under your workboots!

Tipping is completely optional, so 15% is not the minimum; none is the minimum. If you feel 10% is fair than it is not embarrassing. How can it embarrass you if you feel it is fair. If waiters or waitresses can't make ends meet because people supposedly don't tip them "enough" then perhaps they should find a different career. Also, why should I tip 15% on a $300 bottle of wine? Is it really that much harder for the waiter to bring to the table than a free cup of water? No, actually for my table it is probably less work since I drink several cups of water in any given sitting. However, by your standards the first trip to the table "requires" me to tip $45 while the latter, even by your standards, "requires" no tip at all.

On an amusing sidenote, I've seen many waiters and waitresses being interviewed and they complain that the percentage of tips should have gone up to something like 25% since prices have gone up due to inflation. They don't believe their income has gone up proportionally to the price increases. I just want to yell at the TV, "It's a percentage, moron! As prices rise, so do your 15% tips, that so many people think are required."

So belittle people all you want, but maybe you're the "buford," as you put it, since you'll go to a highly overpriced restaurant and tip the waiter $45-$60 because the bill was $300, however, you go to Denny's and tip the waiter $2.25-$3.00 on a $15 bill even though the waiters at each put in the same amount of work. Doesn't make much sense to me, but maybe I'm too dense to see it since I'm one of those people you probably look down upon. Of course, then again, from your criticisms, you'd probably look down on most waiters I've known too since they are probably out back right now soupin' up their Trans-Am, with their kids half naked in the above ground pool because they can't clothe them because of "lousy" tippers like me (of course I usually tip more than 20% but only because I don't go to expensive restaurants, and I usually have good service. In the event of bad service, I don't feel bad about leaving nothing!)

Well, I use a sliding scale of 10-20 percent based on the cost of the food and the quality of service. I also factor in what I asked for, I don't think you should leave less than 10% even if you didn't like the waitress...its still how they make their income.

I also think some things should just be a minimum, like even bringing the cheapest drink is worth a dollar. And when you get something like a happy hour special, or use a coupon, you should tip 15% of what it would have cost, not what you ended up paying. Some people don't get that.

But Rachael is just an all around crappy tipper, and lies about many other things on this show.

We tip ok. But we clean our table. When we leave you can't tell anyone was setting there. As we finish with dishes we stack them, and usually someone takes them during the diner. Afterwards I wipe off the table--putting the crumbs in a glass. And when we tip we either wait on the server to come to the table or we find him/her and hand them the tip.

I like people like you, but unfortunatley I work in a buffet restaurant and people leave stuff everywhere and leave ice cream etc all over the table. God it's annoying.

reply

I always appreciate good service, and tip accordingly. On the same issue, I despise bad service, which seems to be the more common of the two anymore. In spite of this however, I'll always leave a penny to those crappy waiter/waitresses who don't give a damn, just to let them know i didn't forget.

and yes RR is a terrible tipper, usually around a buck or two no matter the meal. lol

reply

I always tip at least 15%... I'm also afraid that if I tip poorly I'll get the saliva special if I ever return to that restaurant and get the same waitress or waiter =S

reply

Are you kidding me? 10%? $5 for a family of four? This must be some kind of a joke. I leave 20% or at least $10 ... whichever is more. Yes, even if I just get a salad that comes to $15 and then a soda for $3, I leave a $10 tip. THAT is a good way to get them to NOT spit in your food. Too bad for you and the waiter-saliva that your family is (unknowingly) consuming.

If you leave no tip then the person might just think you're cheap. If you want to get the point across that they did a horrible job then just leave a few pennies. That always gets the point across and doesn't leave anything up for interpretation. A lot of waiters will come to a table with no tip and just think the customer was cheap, but if there's a few pennies they'll stop and think about how they served that person and will probably be extra nice to the rest of their customers.
