why did the mother always sit in the dark?

My impression is that the mother was suffering from some sort of a clinical depression. The clue is when the boys go to Denver for a visit and they tell their father that all the mother did was sleep and they never left the apartment while they were visiting. I am familar with this condition and all the signs would indicate that this is what she was suffering from.
