Not worth the time...

The plot was disjointed. The characters were stupid. And the story vascillated from the sappy to the profane without a stop in between. First of all, Aidan Quinn's character is too stupid to call the police when he is assaulted and also when his sons are assaulted by the same high school bully. The two old guys leave his kids alone in a strange house to take the girl to the hospital and then in the middle of the night, the two idiot kids take off on a horse in Colorado in late fall. Why the hell didn't the two idiot kids just wait at home for their dad in the first place. When Aidan Quinn's character showed up at the door of the bully's house, I just had to get up and leave. I can't believe I wasted my time watching this. The Hallmark card commercials were more evocative. The only good thing about the movie was the snuggle time on the couch with the Mrs.

SORRY----yes, some of the people in this film acted "stupid" or illogical---but that's why I liked it---It was more REAL and human than 90% of crap I have seen lately. Just my opinion.

I found this ridiculous too. Those poor kids! The high school bully didn't get enough of a comeuppance at the end. All this movie did was prove that Zachery Ty Bryan is very good at playing high school bullies (he played similar characters in A KILLING SPRING and THE RAGE: CARRIE 2). Zach, what else can you play?? I applaud you for getting past HOME IMPROVEMENT, but right now it's hard to tell you from Jason Hervey (Wayne from THE WONDER YEARS)! Play the good guy for a change!

Honestly, the whole youth of America these days and its elders have all gone to pot. You think this movie was dumb??? Girl with a Pearl Earing was dumb. This movie was a good movie, you had too elder brothers who took a girl in they barely knew and practically raised her. You have a father who is a self righteous idiot and can't help his wife, but makes up for it in the end by falling for fellow teacher who cares about him a lot more then his actual wife and you have an up and failing high school jock who thinks that just cause he's got a bloody effing letterman's jacket that he's the king...and then you've got the sweet inocent girl whose mother hates her for getting pregnant and kicks her out of the house, you mix it all up and get a remarkable movie based on the book. So I don't know what the heck you're talking about..but its a good movie.

You have bloody awful taste in movies if you think this is a good movie because this movie is asinine & extremely stupid. I had high hopes for it being that it's a Hallmark movie but it was sooooooooooooooo lame!!! America Ferrera's character was pathetic & she should've gotten an abortion - that's reality, folks. The idea of those two brothers taking in a total stranger just because she got knocked up & her family kicked her out was ludicrous. Horrible acting (even by the usually good Aidan Quinn) by all except for those poor little boys. Don't waste your time on this movie!

You have to realize...that's how the author wrote the book. I've read it, it was very strangely written. Try reading the book some time...it's interesting.

If you think about it, it should be a good movie (I haven't seen it yet). The book was good, it was strange, but it was good.

And just so you know, I do realize that I am relating this entirely by the book, and I want to see the movie. I didn't even know it was one...so that's interesting...

I agree,I don't see what the story was all about. The acting and scenery was the best part of the film, but the story is easily forgetable.Don't waste your 2 hours watching this lame film.

Did the plot have anything to do with the title? It was a bit chaotic at times.

It was the title that caused me to notice the book in the first place.
Plainsong just happens to be one of my favourite British folk/rock bands.

But apparently a Plainsong is unadorned music, such as Gregorian chants, so perhaps the author is saying that this is an unadorned story?

Just my guess [shrugs shoulders.]

I liked the movie. I agree that the teacher should have called the police when he was assaulted by his student. He should have also pressed charges when the same kid kidnapped his two children toward the end of the movie. But I loved the two old guys and America Ferrari's character. I thought that the characters were all realistic. The movie would have been better by making it into a mini series or a weekly television program. Hallmark has a talent for picking wonderful stories and developing them into movies.
