Am I the only one...[spoilers]

...who thinks that the ending TOTALLY ruined the movie for them?

Don't get me wrong Gabrielle Union and Jeremy Remmer are excellent and watching the two of them fall in love is simply beautiful.

However, WTF with the ending? It didn't have to be happy but it could've been more than what it was. He ends up with his *beep* dad and she just goes off with her daughter? That's it? Really?!?!? After the love that the two of them shared they're just done?

Boo. To. That.

Actually I thought the ending was one of the best parts of the movie.

When he took the gun from her after she shot the photographer, and
emptied the gun into him, Ned did this cos he loved her so much that he
would take the blame for the murder, and then told her to go cos he knew the police would show up.

Ned loved her so much he would 20 years to protect her.

I loved the ending as well.

This is probably wishful thinking, but I still kind of believe that they'll get back together after he gets out of prison. The fact that we'll never know keeps me from being wrong.

That is what happens. She also writes, visits & sends him yearly packages

He was happy enough coz he was with his dad.

The ending did ruin the movie for me, but not for the same reasons.

The man who abused Rachel has been confronted and is now dead, she's happily reunited with her child, and Ned is high fiving his father and his father's buddies in prison finally getting the acceptance he's been looking for.

The movie went from this screwed up relationship between two screwed up people to this neat, happy ending in two minutes. It clashed with the rest of the film so badly it was ridiculous.

reply

LOL i love how you said it clashed i was thinking the same thing, but they had to explain the beginning some way, i still liked it dont get me wrong

~You shut the hell up, Jackie-Boy. You're dead. I'm just imagining this, so shut the hell up~

I think you are missing the entire point of the movie. She can't be with Ned, no one can be with Ned. Ned is basically a grown up child with anger issues and rash impulsive thoughts. This is why the scene with him sleeping with the random girl was added, to back up the point that Ned really can't have a stable relationship even with a woman he could love, such as Rachel.

Ned gets what he wants in the end, a family life with his father. Rachel gets what she wants, revenge without personal consequences. Everyone is happy in the end. I don't think Ned and Rachel were ever meant to be together, they were meant to help each other achieve the things that would help them get better and cope with their problems. Ned cannot live a normal life in a normal world, he is better off where he is and he will not have a bad time in prison. He is with his father who will protect him and care for him like he was meant to all those years.

I thought the ending has a beautiful symmetry to it. It was perfect for both characters.

reply

I think after Ned's little excellent adventure with his old friends, he realized he could not live in the free world. Ned had been institutionalized mostly all of his life, that's why he was happy in the end. He got to be a hero, and he also got the ability to have a relationship with his father. When Ned told Rachel that his time with her was his only happy story, he meant it. Ned found away to have a nice ending to his life on the outside, and he was finally happy. The thought of saving Rachel, and their life together was what he needed to have. He realized he could not live with Rachel, nor did he want to live on the outside without her. I was a real love story.

reply

I'm with you. Even tho it didn't totally ruin it it was messed up. I'm thinking she was on her way to visit Ned in Jail or something. It would have been a cool kind of happy ending that was just as *beep* up as their relationship was. Lol they could have had prison love.... (If I do 20yrs for anybody there better be some daggone Prison Love) LOL....

reply

Apparently you missed the whole point of the movie, which built up to the finale...

reply

I loved the ending, I had forgotten about his dad being in prison and at first I was like wtf? This is the end he goes to prison? And then when his dad said "What took you so long?" I actually clapped and laughed.....great ending. He loved his dad so much and now he finally got to be with him.

reply

I loved the ending, I think it was amazing and very appropriate.
And SO different! This movie is so unlike any other movie i have ever seen, god i love it! :D

Most delicious actor? Jeremy Renner.
Now THERE'S a REAL man!

reply

The point too of him taking the blame was he hadn't actually killed the molester; Rachel had. Just like his attorney had said he couldn't kill someone who was already dead, like the black man in the flashback, so he got off. In the case of the molester, this time he got the bid although he only shot him twice after she's already killed him.

reply

I enjoyed the ending but I do agree that it felt tidied up quickly. But I do think one of the above posters said is true, maybe her & her daughter were on their way to him, who knows. They leave this up to you. Ned really and truly redeemed himself in her eyes by taking the blame.

"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit' me!" Hudson in Aliens.

reply

She doesn't matter. Sure he liked her a lot and let her go but the whole premise of the movie was that he idolized his dad. He ended up right where he wanted to be.

reply

She mattered. A grown man breaking into crying in front of a woman breaking up with him? He cared. He just knew she was right. She needed to go be with her daughter, which left him alone and he hated that.

reply

Personally I think they could have made it as a couple even as messed up as they were. They still needed therapy and some "social/economical skills" counseling but they seemed to really care for each other and get along better than a bunch of "sane" fictional couples I've seen.

Since the movie ended the way it did, I certainly hope it's Rachel's intention to visit Ned in prison. Whether he's found another "happy time" or not, he's serving a prison sentence he didn't earn. If she's free to live her life on the outside because of him, she owes him that much.
