His shirt. 'Spoiler'

I could not get past the part were he made him tie his shirt. Too tuff to watch. I would have fought to the death, to keep that from happing to me. Did he get raped on the first day. Because he was laying on the floor under the cot not speeking after the fist night?

reply

Absolutely he got raped. He was laying on the floor awoken by bubba....he immediately withdraws from him out of fear and hides under the bed. It was a clear indication in my mind he got raped or had to succumb to bubba's demise...lol....Notice how Randy was super fragile laying down on his side as well as his flickering of his jaw. ewww. i'm being funny, but i'm not joking.

Not to start an argument, but did it ever occur to you that your point wasn’t that you would "fight to the death" when you had sex with a guy, only when others would find out?

reply

I think that the concept is that rape is traumatic. Even if you like same sex activities before you landed in jail, being tossed around like a pack of cigarettes by a group of ugly tatooed murderers is traumatic, no matter who you are. I think that the film tries to expose that the system does not work. You leave worse than when you came in, almost without exception. People who could change and live good lives, are destroyed and turned into the monsters that society thinks they are. The system is set up to perpetuate career violence. Prison reform is a tough subject, because nobody has an easy answer, but I think its time we all agreed that the current system really, truly does nothing but create more, worse, harder criminals.

Film is a cornerstone of any good life.

exactly Im with christopher....

randy was even going to kill this guy because of what he was suffering and he would have gotten more years and end up even more messed up in the head

I know most of us would say while watching this that we wouldn't put up with this and that, but in actual fact, given the circumstances, we'd probably do exactly what Randy did. I think he realized that even though he wanted to kill 'Jake,' he understood that there would be another 'Jake' to take his place. |A horrible predicament that way too many are having to suffer through and many of whom will be traumatized and damaged beyond repair when/if they are released.

Do you agree with me that a kid like 'Randy,' doing time for the crimes he committed and was subsequently convicted for, be placed in a cell with a man who murdered his wife and has no remorse over, still justifying his actions to anyone who asks? The text below is what I typed in another thread and thought I'd put it in this one to see if anyone agrees with me on it.

Although I've always been someone who says regardless of what the law is/says, we all know what it is and should abide by it, I think commonsense must prevail at times like this. I fail to see how it helps 'Randy,' his family and/or the community by locking him away for 25 years and putting in him a cell with a convicted murderer. Sure, he committed 3 crimes, 2 drug related and one of vandalizing a mans car, but for gods sake, look at them for what they are?

Plus, if they continue to follow down this path, us the tax payers may as well just hand our checks over at the end of every pay week as we will be needing thousands of prisons to house these people. At present their solution to this exact situation is to parole convicted pedophiles, rapists etc. to make room for the 3-strikers!

Be it not a extremely serious matter, I'd find this lack of moral, ethical and commonsense conduct utterly comedic.

It would be rather interesting to know exactly how many children/relatives of Politicians, Judges and other so-called 'high-ranking members of society' are doing 25 years after striking out!!

Food for thought, just what this film is.

Agree with everything here. I love movies like this that can be discussed and bring up real life questions. Such a great film, really leaves you thinking.

If you don't fight, you're a woman. Stick someone and gain respect, period. If Jake would have been butchered (Cut into pieces, blood splattered all over the cell, etc), word would spread about that. You would have NO ONE trying that again.

Anyway. Obviously his sentence was idiotic. Those are the breaks.

Not true at all. That's One of the biggest lies about prison life. Maybe in a one on one situation no one will *beep* with him again but prison is rarely one on one anything. So if a dude wants that ass it doesn't matter who the about to be victim has stabbed or "cut into pieces", that dude will get that ass and his friends will help him.
