At the end when Rika runs into the house looking for Mariko why was there smoke when after kayako crawls down the stairs there isn't? I watched this movie a few times and I know everything else except why there was smoke.

Help much appreciated.

No, no, no. Rika died years after Toyama was in the house. When we first see Rika in the opening scene, she is an insecure, inexperienced social worker. At the end, she has become a more mature adult, who has graduated from school and become a full-fledge nurse.
