Ending of Ju-on: The Grudge

I have search around the internet and on the IMDb website for information regarding the end of Ju-on: The Grudge, but have found none.

The ending scene shows an empty city with missing posters at ever corner. Is it implied that everyone has died? The lights are still working so it is possible some one is alive.

Did the curse actually reach out to people, possibly as in the case of Mariko, or did everyone die by association? Simply interacting with people who had gone in the house led to death - as in the case of the Security guard.

I may be taking the end of the film too seriously. Is it implied that the entire population has perished to the curse? I believe the ending scene may only exist to show desolation. Still, I question it because the scene closes with missing posters and empty streets. As of now, I believe the ending scene was only to show desolation. But if any one else sees the possibility of everyone dying to the curse, please post!

The ending scene left me confused - I will take it as just a "sad, desolate scene," meaning life still goes on. I will assume that everyone is still alive. But does anyone else share my confusion?

It can be looked at in two ways.
Like you said, as if the curse has spread, or a symbolism of what COULD happen with the curse.
It can also represent how alone and desolate things can feel, even in a big, bustling city like Tokyo. And it is very spot on! In Tokyo you are surrounded by people, but you can be very alone.
