I wondered that as well. Plus, he must have been aware of Kayako since he looked genuinely frightened when he heard the case was still going on. He also must have been to Saeki house since the murders took place there, so he had to be exposed to the curse as well. They don't give us an explanation or anything. shareThe curse has aspects of time travel. One example is teen age Izumi's father the detective seeing her at the house (with the other teen girls). But he only hears the case was reopened when his daughter was little.
