This has aged terribly

Re-watching it again after five years away from it and wow... It looks so dated. All of the scenes with Toshio are actually laughable. My girlfriend, who hates horror films and is scared by everything, was commenting upon how cute the kid was. Clearly not the desired effect the film-makers were intending!

Ofcourse, there are still some iconic scenes that hold up well - the corridor scene and the stairs at the end but for the most part, this film has been surpassed by everything that has come after it. I'd even dare to say that the Sarah Michelle Gellar remake is more unsettling...

I don't think the film Ringu itself has aged badly (it's still a well-made film), it's just that the whole premise of the film was based on technology that was becoming antiquated even at the time of its release. Within about two years of Ringu's release, nobody really had VHS anymore.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

What? Ringu will never age! That's like saying Cronenbergs Videodrome has aged!!

I agree. This movie looked so cheaply made and the narrative was kind of a mess. It just isn't scary at all. I'm saying this without having ever seen the American remake so there's no bias here.

Just saw it and it did nothing for me. The main problem I had was that it was hard not to think of the "ghosts" as simply actors in makeup - that makes it hard to be scared, despite the competent direction and the actors doing their best to "act scared."

With this being said, I won't knock anyone who likes it, or was effectively scared by it. I'll admit at my age it's much harder to be scared by a film. Real life is scary enough.

With that being said ... [REC] (for example) creeped the hell out of me when I saw it ... but these things often boil down to personal taste.

It has an amazing atmosphere though, you gotta give it that. And at least it hasn't aged as terribly as Ringu.

I have to agree on that. When I first saw it, I was scared *beep* and actually my cousin was in tears begging me to turn it off (to be fair, she is kind of softy. She cried with Avatar ). I rewatched this past weekend and it did nothing to me. I was actually angry because no one tried to hit her with something. At least try to kick it's ugly face :D

I don't think it's aged that badly. I watched it for the first time today and although I didn't get properly scared by it (as a huge horror fan it takes a fair bit to make me that scared), I thought it worked very well. It was incredibly creepy (her crawling down the stairs was very freaky), the atmosphere is great, the plot is interesting and entertaining, and I think overall it's still effective.

Seriously? Your gf was commenting about how cute the kid is? No offense but she's too sexuakly liberated and would probably sleep with other men.
