No, you're not. I had a discussion with a friend today about this film and maybe you can shed some light. I think the last scene with the Grandmother and Chango means the baby died too and he is on the other side with Felix's mother or possibly grandmother. What do you think?

reply

I don't know if that image has one definite meaning, but I think as these are most probably the last seconds in Felix' life, it may be a kind of blend of things that were most important to him in life.
By losing Felix, little Chango will most likely be as lost as Felix was when his Grandmother died. That's one link between the two persons in the image.
Felix gave the love he received from his Grandmother to little Chango. Now he remembers both, so that bond of love is another link.

This movie left me sad and depressed. It was obvious to us that Felix should have been looking for a job before he lost all his money. But how could he, with nobody to look after Chango while he's at work? How could the chain of events, the spiraling downwards, have been prevented? Should Felix have been talking to Roberto, asking him to be thankful for his wife, his son, his life? After all, Felix himself is still a boy.

One message this movie portrays is that, whatever people may say, being outside of society is not generally a matter of choice. One prerequisite of being responsible is having been taught how to be responsible. None of the persons in this movie really have, and I think if we don't feel responsible for people like them, we actually are responsible for their misery.

Just my two cents.

Chris,
I appreciate your two cents. The idea that he would think of the two sources of love in his life, his grandmother and Chango makes a lot of sense. I saw this movie and the Japanese masterpiece "No One Knows" back to back and left me very shaken and depressed. These films are not science fiction, young life is not valued all over the world. We are stomping on our future in the horrors we dish out to children. Both films are brilliant examples of this. The death of the youngest child in the Japanese film was as sad as anything I've ever seen on film.

I just saw it yesterday on Sundance channel, I must say it really left me depressed to see what happened at the end.
