Very interesting ......

I wasn't sure what to expect when I read about this movie but I was certainly not disappointed. I always enjoy "history lessons" and this movie had plenty of those, as well as "life lessons". Although there are some big names in the movie (see next paragraph) the stars are the Mother and Daughter.

The bonus, to me, was the scenes between Malkovich, Deneuve, Papas and Sandrelli. The ladies are three of the biggest names in international cinema over the last 40 years and Malkovich, of course, is Malkovich.

Speaking of Malkovich, I saw another thread that criticized his lack of fluency with the Portuguese language. I, for one, applaud his effort. I think he explained that he was not fluent and that he understood it better than he spoke it. I think his efforts were meant, primarily, to include the little girl.

As much as I enjoyed the movie I was very surprised at the way the ending played out. I'll only say that there was a certain amount of irony expressed considering the path that the movie had taken.

Well worth seeing, in my opinion.

NOT...VERY INTERESTING. The movie goes a very, very long way to make a point about modern society. The first 3/4 of the movie is a travelogue of a trip by Mother and Daughter and their stops along the way. The "famous" ladies on board the ship are only mildly interesting and the dialog could have been more dramatic and effusive. The 4 people at the Captains table (including Mr Malkovich) were all about as animated as the doll Capt. John gave the little girl. I get the ending but that is one long boring way to make to a statement. Having to endure the long takes of the ships bow slipping through the water and a ship sailing across the horizon were mind numbing (the bow thing was repeated at least 3 maybe 4 times).

Well worth avoiding. Watch "House of Sand" a Brazilian movie that really good.

Well, I guess we disagree on this one. I have seen House Of Sand, though, and really enjoyed it. I suppose 1 out of 2 is not so bad.
