Why not in theaters?

Hi all.

I saw "Trekkies" in the theater and IT WAS A LAUGH RIOT!! So, I ask, why, if it was so much fun in the theatre, why is "Trekkies 2" getting a "straight to video" treatment?

2 possible reasons

most sequals end up w/ a smaller budget then the original, figuring Trekkies already had a small budget, I doubt Trekkies 2 had much left for marketing in theaters

Trekkies came out at a perfect time, there was a new Star Trek movie out, Galaxy Quest & Free Enterprise (2 great movies that parody star trek) also where out in theaters, so Trekkies just sort of fit that year in theaters.

Not to mention that when I saw the original Trekkies in the theatre, my boyfriend and I were the only ones in the theatre...:(.

Sadly, it takes a ton of cash for distributors to put a film out for theatrical release, unless they think it will make it into the Top Ten on opening weekend, they don't really bother bother anymore. And Trekkies 2 isn't arty enough for the art houses. Sad but true...I'll keep looking for it at video stores!!

I asked at the premiere and had it set up to play at a Sacramento art theater but Paramount beancounters said no -- retail DVD release only. It would've done okay in Sacramento as Sac has many sci-fi fans for some reason and since it was on DVD it could've played at art houses nationwide before the DVD hit retail. A borrowed promo copy made the rounds in Sacramento though.

I don't want to say this movie was a bomb, but someone taped one of the DVDs under my car....
