The Last Battle + Secret Ending were poor

In my opinion.

Nobunaga in his Genma form was hardly much different than his form in Onimusha 2. He essentially had the same elemental attacks (minus his ice and earth from Onimusha 2). And all Samanosuke was able to do as a special attack was jump forward and slice. It got boring slashing away at those little orbs floating around him too. Very repetitive.

And as for the Secret Ending... yes Capcom that was well worth conquering the training levels for. Ako got enough screentime as it was. Samanosuke only had eyes for Kaede anyway, so why pointlessly include an ending of Ako trying to prove she could be 'all woman'?

The final battle & ending felt rushed to me.

Onimusha 3's a good game, but it's terribly overrated. Looked on favourably due to Jean Reno's presence (despite the travesty that is his English voice's absence) and the breathtaking opening CGI. Those two factors alone don't make a good game. The time travel plot was bollox too. They also missed Keita Amemiya as a character designer. IMDB & Wikipedia have him down as the character designer, but that's inaccurate. His official fansite tells me he is only mentioned in the credits for his work in Onimusha 2.

Onimusha 2 FTW!

PS.
Don't turn this into a Samanosuke vs. Jubei thread (you know who you are!).

Sam rocks Jubei sucks! Grrr

Talking to me? Haha I think the debates are stupid.

Anyway I think most of the Oni games, gameplay wise are sub par to the clones that came after it. But for some reason, this is the only game where the presentation actually pulled me over.

The secret ending was poor, specially when you put it that way. They make no mention of Kaede. For once Id like to see an exciting badass ending that ends on a high note. Something we'd see and wanna play but cant.

I still think in general the Oni games are under rated, try and search for one fan site.

I think the fist Onimusha was probably the best because it seemed to be the darkest of the series. The slash em' up never gets old, though. I liked 3, but I was disappointed when we got no mention of Kaede :( .

Nobunaga was weaker in Oni 2. He was a joke in that game... well all of Oni 2 was a joke but 3 wasn't really all that better.

"Samanosuke only had eyes for Kaede anyway"
That's right, I've been saying that since 2003 and Oni Blade Warriors (story-mode) proves that. Ako... dear god... what the hell were they thinking when they came up with her????????

"Sam rocks Jubei sucks! Grrr"
Got that right!

"I think the fist Onimusha was probably the best because it seemed to be the darkest of the series"
Oni 1 is the best and those are the many reasons. Kaede isn't talked about until Oni DoD, which takes place in 1597. Samanosuke (as Tenkai Nankobo) says, "We should put an end to this madness... for Kaede."
