i liked this movie, but what i dont get (spoiler)

all of the sudden, at the end of the film when he leaves on the plane, there is *beep* OGRE?

so i watch the deleted scenes, and there is this whole paintsniffing uncle character that is taken from the film. he was really funny, but why on earth did the director feel the need to just put him in the end of the movie. it made no sense if he wasn't even going to introduce the character. PRESTO....OGRE!

this movie was still very good, however

It made sense to leave that piece of "Ogre" in to suggest "Hey There is a whacky family member" taking care of Jay and getting him on a plane to Detroit.

It's just a cameo, I don't think it takes you out of any moment.

it sure does take me out of the moment, since there is no prior introduciton to him. a scene in which the main protagonist says his/ her goodbyes usually hits an emotional peak for the film. to put him there just to put him there is pointless when we have no idea why he is there. it would be different if it was like some shot in a store or something, but this is a goodbye where only a handfull of important characters were present

I agree, it took me slightly out of the moment as well. At first I thought it was some sort of imaginary dude who the brother was leaving behind to watch over the kids, or some *beep* like that. I also though it *might* have been the old haunted house man all dressed up, sort of like a special effects send off. Ogre being another strange family member makes sense, but it would have been excellent if we had had like 10 second prior introduction so that it makes sense.

*beep* you, THATS my name!

In the Deleted Scenes section of the DVD, there are several hilarious scenes that feature OGRE as the paint/glue-sniffing Uncle Marvin. Every single one of his scenes made me laugh out loud, tis a shame that they were cut from the film.

Who is OGRE?

It certainly took ME out of the moment.

haha - let me explain it to you this way...we shot that 2nd unit and my producer gidnt get any "OGRE FREE" shots. He was always in the frame. So if I wanted to show you who Green was waving at I needed at least a little Donn Gibb. Make Sense? I never intended to cut him so I had no "Introduction" that would have worked in the final edit.

Donn did a great job in the movie...we might be releasing the "Dirty South" version of th efilm in the near future with al of his scenes cut back in.

Glad people are still finding my little movie and responding to it. :)

Yeah, and I must say, it is a really great movie and I don't know why it is so underrated. I just heard about it, and believe me, it was REALLY hard to get (I live in Mexico and this little jewel was nowhere to be found). The story's really deep and the acting was outstanding. I wonder why Bret Harrison is such a low-profile actor, I could really feel his pain in this movie and I think he deserved some more recognition for it.

Anyway, I'm glad YOU are still lurking around these places, to see what people still have to say about your work. I tried to check the website but it seems to be long gone.

Thanks for such a wonderful film.

Why wasn't it cut before he appears? We don't see him until it pans over.

I found it very jarring - almost like Top Secret when he's saying goodbye and the cast of the Wizard of Oz is there inexplicably too. I assumed it was an 'in' joke of some kind or a remnant of something cut, but it really takes you out of the movie.
