Sick and Disgusting

If NBC were sincere about this movie then they need to show it with no commercials. That is how they make money. Off ads. Isn't it nice to think that we are treated to a grotesque showing of September 11th (in an election year no less) and then have it sponsered by everybodys favorite sneaker or hair coloring brand? It is just plain wrong.

Any movie about September 11th will be wrong. It is too early for that.

If nothing else (being a republican myself) I find it funny that "The Reagans" created a firestorm of emotion, but this or even the other piece of NBC trash "Saving Jessica Lynch" didn't. GET WITH THE PROGRAM AMERICA!!!!! Do you want these people telling you what to watch or not?

Personally I find comfort in the ultimate solution. The power button. If I don't like something I turn it off. And this is what needs to be done more often in situations like with this one more piece of NBC trash.

reply

Personally, I don't know why the film was made. I think it is too soon to make a film dealing with a horrific event such as 9/11.

Television is a hypocrisy. On one hand, they holler about decency, such as the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" incident. On another, they have the lack of decency to show a film so soon after the events took place (Saving Jessica Lynch, for example).

Of course, the power of the dollar will always rule.

And you're right: I can turn off the tv.

I agree with both of your comments that his movie is in very bad taste. I don't know what is the appropriate "waiting period" before making a movie about a tragedy such as this, but in my mind; with everything that is going on in the world right now this timing is not right!

reply

It barely touched 9/11 directly, it just hit the surrounding events with AlQueda and such. It was meant to use fictional characters to show how homeland security worked, but it was obviously a poorly concieved atempt at a ratings monster, comming off corney and just plain pathetic.

reply

The worst thing about this movie is that it was a long "entertaiment disgused" advertisement for the Bush administration. This is the way around campaign contributions. Shouldn't this film have been preceeded by a disclaimer that the characters were fictional?!?! Like Law & Order does?

reply

Jeez, chill out guys. It's just a movie.

reply

I realize that.

Thats why I have the final say. The Power Button.

reply

I really did not see anything wrong with the timing of this movie, since 9/11 happened over 2 years. However, the movie seemed to be a watered down version of what happened. Also, the commercials did not bother me as the program needs to be paid for somehow.

reply

"Jeez, chill out guys. It's just a movie."

This is what's so sad. The events of 9/11 aren't exactly ancient history and we are still dealing with the fallout from that day and yet we've moved on to the point where someone can say, "Chill out...It's just a movie."

reply

I actually wrote a panning commentary on the movie. I thought it was cheap and an apologetic piece for the Dept. of Homeland Security. What's worse, it appears that they wrote it so that as real-life events play out, there can be a "Homeland Security II." Ugh.

reply

I caught the tail end of this movie and I am a bit offended by the fact that it ends with a bunch of people watching a speech by Bush who initially balked at setting up an Office of Homeland Security.

reply

Well, Homeland Security II would be kind of like Threat Matrix, the short-lived ABC series. Not a bad idea, IMO. showing on a week to week basis the drama of dealing with an ever-changing and very real threat. Don;t see that it's much different from NYPD Blue.
(in the interest of full disclosure, i will say i played a terrorist in HS)

If we calculate one minute of silence for each of the 3000 we lost on 9/11that would equal 2.08 days of silence.

But still, perhaps it is too soon to dare even speak of 9/11. Death to all who offend the delicate sensibilities of the masses!

Praise be to God! Long live the defenders of propriety and decency!

reply

"Too soon?" Plaaalease. It took just months for Hollywood to crank out WWII movies after Pearl Harbor was bombed. People need to realize this acutally happened, and I thought the movie scammed out by not showing what those terrorists did.

Who is telling you what to watch? "Saving Jessica Lynch" was pretty close to what happened. NBC didn't make her the "hero" the Pentagon did, did you even watch the movie? Do you only get NBC?

Bush did create the office of Homland Security, he didn't want a Department of Homeland Security because the Democrats wanted union representativation, then the Democrats blocked the bill because it didn't have the union mumble jumble in it. An election later, and minus a few Democrats we have a Dept. of HS.

Why is everything that shows the governtment in a good light a "commerical" for Republicans? Why is every govenmental error, ie Iraq WMD intelligence, is not "our" intel, but "Bush's?"

I do not believe that it is Republican propanganda. But NBC propanganda. If the Democrats were in the White House it would be the same.

I did see the Jessica Lynch movie, and thought the same.

The real issue here is not that it's just a movie. Its the motives behind the movie. The cash in by NBC on the backs of all those who have died. We need time. Yes the movie needs paid for, but there have been times when something like this has come along and played without comericals. A single sponsor type of thing. But they didn't do it.

It appeared that NBC was trying to cash in on peoples emotions, a decision that apparently didn't pay off as this movie did poorly in the ratings. In contrast 10.5 seemed to do really well even though it was a poorer movie.

My only beef was the the motivations of NBC during ratings season. They were wrong. And besides, wouldn't it be better to wait for all the facts to come to light before you rush to judgement? Wouldn't it make a better movie if all the facts were known?

reply

I read somewhere that the movie was a pilot for a series that was not bought. Perhaps it was shown simply to use it, so NBC could get it out of the way.

I think many of the incidents of the movie did occur, even though the names of people may have been changed. I'm almost fully sure that the ending, where many of these people end up in one place, is quite fictional.

Is it that most people in this forum are offended because someone got under the guard of the 'untouchable americans'. I'm not trying to start a riot here, just trying to make the point that when movies like this come along it stirs up massive emotions of patriotism, and possibly a little guilt in some quarters because some people saw this coming and did nothing of any substance to stop it happening. September 11 that is. Please bear in mind that I'm an Australian and what happened on that tragic day left me such a huge sense of loss that I've never really recovered from. So is the argument really about the film or about the event and how it left people feeling.

reply

I agree with the title of this message, but on a totally different level. I find it sick and disgusting that people like the ones who posted in this chain still believe that these attacks were orchestrated by 19 crazy arabs who "hate the freedom of the american people." On the contrary, the official story of the "attacks on 9/11" is a fabrication worthy of the introduction "Once upon a time." In truth, the story contains so many holes that it falls apart at the slightest poke at the integrity of the case it presents. Anyone who examines the attacks logically will see that it is IMPOSSIBLE for the attacks to have taken place the way Bush said they did. For one, jet fuel cannot possibly burn hot enough to melt the steel supports of the buildings, as it was said to have done. The rate of collapse of the towers was almost identical to that of a freefall, something impossible if the top floors were indeed falling onto the ones below and crushing then with their weight. This barely nicks the surface when it comes to the case against the conspiracy theory propagated by the Bush administration and every major media outlet in North America. I find it pathetic and depressing that its been almost 5 years since Bush first lied about the attacks, and the world is still oblivious and ignorant to the truth. Wake up people! It's time you realized they've been lying to you all this time and killing innocent Iraqis and Afghans in your name. Really, would you have allowed them to go to war unless you thought that they were responsible for the deaths of 3000 of your countrymen?

reply

Mihai you make some interesting points but you lean more to the political side of the argument. I neither disagree or agree with your statement but I will say that we all need to work towards something like this and other gross acts of violence happening again.

Did you watch Saving Jessica Lynch?

I liked the movie.

Yeah, it was a *beep* movie but holy *beep* man, wanna whine some more?

Replying 11 years after the movie and 15 years after the horrible events. Looking back at your comments you really have not commented at the quality of the movie but your dislike for the timing and NBC. At the time I probably would have agreed with you but I didn't see it until about 2 years ago on an old DVD.

Now to make it clear both this show and Saving Jessica Lynch were propaganda films. You may not like them but these sort of films were made in every conflict from World War 2 to Vietnam. Most have little substance so take it for what they are. Now I didn't mind watching them for entertainment only and didn't fool myself into thinking that I was seeing a true documentary of what really happened. It's pretty clear both shows took a little truth and built a movie around it. Yes to make money because that's how it works whether you like it or not.

I do believe that Homeland Security was slightly accurate in portraying how information gets missed if you don't work together. Organization like the CIA, FBI, police and others do need to help each other. Not sure if it has worked out well but the idea is fact. One tidbit in the show I thought was good was to say not every Arab is a terrorist and someone you least expect could actually be a bad guy. This fact has been proven over the last 15 years.

This show must have been a pilot for a series that didn't happen. There was too many loose ends to be a stand alone movie.

Now I find your totally accurate in your last statement that you have the ability to just shut your power button off if you don't like something.
