After this failure, do you think 2k/Gearbox makes a new Duke

And by new I don't mean a sequel, I mean re-start the franchise themselves without crappy 3D Realms.

One do you think the game will fail so hard that they retire it?

I think Duke deserves another try. I don't think a game character and franchise of this magnitude can go out like this.

Retire? No.

This is a very iconic character we're talking about and while the game wasn't exactly praised, it isn't really hated either - people just to seem to think that it's fun, but forgettable, but still has the "Duke vibe", so I'm a 99% certain Gearbox will try and make a fresh & updated Duke game.

Especially because he sells well.

Plenty of people DO like it, but review scores have far too much sway on the public, so I can't say for sure.

But I do know that Pitchford likely wouldn't condone some sort of re-imagining (or something to that effect) of Duke. After all, a good portion of DNF was made by an understaffed and unpayed group of people with next to no resources (Tryptich), so it stands to reason that the very well-to-do Gearbox would be able to deliver a much more polished, built from the ground up shooter for the next installment, nullifying whatever benefit a reboot would have.

The thing is this series isn't all that and never has been. EVERY Duke Nukem game released has been average. Yes DN3D was the best to date but that's not saying much. This game is pretty boring at times when playing it. I completed it twice to see if it would grow on me. The game hasn't moved an inch in my original thoughts of it. It's an average game with subpar loading times and dull combat and weapons. This is Duke Nukem from 1996 not from what it should be today.

I think Gearbox would be pretty stupid to buy the Duke rights...then do nothing with them.

Yeah a restart to Duke is what is needed.
I don't think they should have released this game if I'm honest. They should have built a new game from scratch and not "polished" an unfinished, 14 year old product.

What failure?
The only thing that is failure about it, are those who pick up every single atom of a problem, with two pairs of toothpicks.

Call of Duty's Modern Warfare series unfortunately set the standard for contemporary shooters. Very few seem to remember what old FPS games were like.

What happened with this game was a lot of people comapared it and reviewed it against other games made today. Sure, this game does not hold up against most shooters and action games that have graced us in this age, but it was still a really fun game. I enjoyed every second of it, I love the character and love his one liners. It was a pretty decent shooter, and theres not much you can expect for a game that was in development for 14 years. If anything, they should make a next gen sequel and not reboot the series. Though, after the harsh criticism it got, theres no way that will ever happen anyways. Basically, the series is dead for now until someone decides to make a sequel, and if they do they better make it in less than 14 years this time around.
