...foul! Yes, FOUL. Cannot imagine a female gamer enjoying this kind of low and offensive joking. And if you have wife and children, you cannot enjoy such kind of game in their presence, while it's too sick and vile. The old generation will get hurt too. If you try to think about a game which is absolutely not family entertainment in gaming industry, this is it.
Failure? Far cry from this. You know what "failure" in the gaming industry is? "Prince of Persia" franchise (hope, it can be called like that). The original 2D game was fantastic. Then they destroyed the original prince world by the 3D game with a different character and story. And then they remade the story and re-remade it, and re-re-remade it. Now the whole "Prince of Persia" thing is like a chewing gum that needs to be spitted out. While all they have to do is to make a solid game with the same character and the same story, but using the modern engine. Perhaps, just making an updated version for PS3, like they did with "ICO".
And here we have the same badass Duke Nukem, the same story (a bit tuned up), only the detail of the picture and sound is miles better. And the opening "music video" evokes memories of the good old 1990s gaming. He still can kick the doors open. As to his blurred vision of the surroundings, Duke is getting old, he's got astigmatism or whatever, but when you zoom and screw his eyes, the details come into focus (at least in the PS3 version), which is groovy. Ego meter is a clever feature and the use of weapons is more thought-provoking. Running about and desperately looking for "the medicine bags" in action games gets monotonous quite often - and here you just have to duck and cover. Beer drinking ability, pool and table ice-hockey mini-games (with various comments coming out of Duke's dirty mouth) alone can save this game from obliteration.
To me the navigation of the character in the PS3 version is difficult. But that's just me. Cannot get used to this gamepad in 3D shooters after the ability to aim and shoot precisely with the mouse in PC gaming.
Duke Nukem does not need any reboot. It can be the final chapter of his adventures. Most likely, they will not be able to push the badass quality any further.
In conclusion a few words: DNF is a very foul game, it is immoral and disturbing, but it's quality and fresh ideas in character/weapon navigation and bizarre Giger-oriented atmosphere and sets spiced up with insane mockery and USA destruction are something you will never witness anywhere else. Never ever.
As they say: "Atomny gerzog vernulsya!" Serious Sams don't have a chance against this kind of virtual holocaust.
