Potential unfulfilled?

I felt that the script of this movie was fantastic (though I watched with English subtitles). Some nice subtle dialogue that was very realistic and comedic, with some memorable moments.

Anna was very good in the role and seemed to work well with the script and her character, however, William seemed distanced from the part - as if reading rather than acting.

The direction was also unfulfilling in that the use of handicam for the entire movie (bar the closing credits!) didn't allow the audience to settle on the moment and take it in. Handicams seem to be becoming a clichée for and 'indie atmosphere'. Some of the editing was a little too sharp, too, not leaving enough time for contemplation, etc. Some of the shots seemed a little contrived, especially the deep shots of the hallway, which seemed as if it was supposed to be 'arty'.

I think that somebody like Adrian Lyne could have taken the film to the next level with some more suited direction, bringing out all of the nuances of the script.

Anybody agree/disagree?

Have you ever known an accountant or tax attorney? That "distance" in William is his defining characteristic. If the character were an architect or engineer, I would agree with you. But my father and I are both tax preparers, and our wives both watched the film saying, "Yes, that's my husband!"

Quite disturbing to see oneself on the screen: earnestly desirous of an intimate realationship while, at the same time, trying to avoid growing closer.

A sensuous and romantic treasure.

I understand that the "distance" was his defining characterisitc - hence the name of the film. He is so close yet so far.

Maybe empty would be a better word. The actor seemed distant only through the script and action - his face and movements, however, seemed empty rather than distant or close.

I thought the actor playing William was excellent, very nice restraint even in the face of an extreme need to know more about the woman who began coming weekly to his office. Great acting all around.

"Don’t think I have ever seen a Frenchman dance to soul music in that light before either"

That was my favorite part of the whole movie...so unexpected and cute. He's actually got some great moves!

Wasn't it the psychiatrist who said, "Our professions are very alike"?

I thought that Fabrice Luchini did a VERY good job indeed. And that includes his little dance

I disagree....I felt this actor did a tremendous job being exactly who he was intended to be, and it made the film more believable.
