why did marc mention the elevator?

to threaten william?

"there is no brake, it can be dangerous if the elevator falls down"
I thought that sick marc is going to cause an accident

That was my interpretation. I certainly don't believe it had anything to do with concern, not after the really tense and confrontational conversation they had in William's office.

Perhaps not a physical threat but a warning that he'll be hurt or destroyed by a relationship with Anna? But I thought that too. It definitely comes under the heading of false foreshadowing.

I thought the scene where the real shrink suggests she may not even have a husband and may have rung his doorbell on purpose was similarly misleading. After that I kept expecting it to turn into Hitchcock territory.

This was a sweet and absorbing film but not one of Leconte's best.

False foreshadowing...

Especially given the sub-plot with the man afraid of elevators. Given the building's small number of floors the short fall would only affect someone who was already afraid.

Wasn't William's office on the sixth floor?

I interpreted Marc's remark as a physical threat.

reply

Same here. I thought that Marc figured that at the least, William would be frightened into having to walk up six flights of stairs each time, a minor but still significant inconvenience.
