I Kinda Liked This Movie

Anyone who's ever been bored with their life, or who have led a dull existence, and wanted to experience something different and rewarding - besides taking up golf or getting a Harley or simply hanging out in a sports bar - I think can empathize with this story. If you've ever tried out for the local community theater, taken up ballroom dancing, or joined that barbershop quartet and then were pushed beyond your comfort zone; then I think you can get just that little bit more out of this flick. It's beyond my ability to explain more than that here.

The one point that really popped out to me was when our hero joined the community theater and experienced this whole new culture of people that come out after their daily work hours and who fancy themselves as artists - and truly ARE artists! And it's real life. That janitor you might see in your son's elementary school - becomes Nathan Detroit at nights. That matronly lady serving you in your local bakery maybe competing in dance competitions on the weekends. And your mailman? Well, you never know. Unfortunately this movie goes off in different directions, but it would have been more entertaining to me if it continued to follow that evolving line.

That was the main message I got out of this flick. There's an exciting self-fufilling life out there after work hours, as long as you can drop your pretenses and inhibitions, and give it a try. You might find that everything else - is not as important. I also took to heart that little bit of philosophy the one main actor took when asked why he dropped Broadway and came back to community theater and a fellow actor asked him to consider, "Well, do you want to be a star, or an artist?" Certainly not many get a chance to the big leagues; but for some, there is a whole other culture of your local people living out their talents while the rest of the community is at home watching re-runs of Seinfeld.
