Manic DVD Commentary

I just watched this film on DVD after hearing it was excellent.

I thought it was just so-so, and I decided to listen to the DVD commentary before making a final opinion.

Well, it was a mistake. The director, Rick Schroder, is very nice, as is Tim McGraw, but the third individual on the track is the boxing choreographer. He took over a good deal of the time gushing about how great this movie is, and how perfect it is and how it's the best movie he's ever worked on.

At first I thought it was cute how enthusiastic he was, but it started to bother me after a while.

First of all, I would rather have heard more from the director about the actual making of the film. Secondly, this choreographer seems to live in his own little world, acting as if this film is the greatest thing since sliced bread, when in my opinion, it's just "okay." I realize that they had a tiny budget, and they did well with what they had to work with.

This movie reminded me of an After School Special, with its corny stereotypes. The performances were all good, however, the cinematography was great, and I know that Native Americans are under-represented in the movies, so it was nice to see a story like this.

However, when somebody tries to over-sell it, this diminishes the effect of the movie even more.

The choreographer sounded like he was either delusional or intoxicated. Maybe both.

I recommend against listening to the commentary. It's disappointing, and there's not enough interesting information.
