Were they really in love (spoilers)

It seemed to me that Bobby Darin married Sandra Dee for looks, he didn't seem to really love her. They also fought all the time, and she cried on their wedding night. In the end when he dies, then the credits come up, it says that Sandra Dee never remarried and she remains in love with Darin. Do you think they really loved each other truly???

Honestly I don't think that anyone can really say; their was definatly a relationship between them, more of a freinds trying to be lovers type of marriage. It seemed to me that Bobby set out to woe her and ended up sweeping her off her feet. Sandra has always been portrayed as being naive and selfless but you would think that their has to be something more to a person then just that. The relationship held on though, even as they themselves fizzled in life and in the spotlight. The scene in the garage after she leaves and he smashes the car, and then when she comes back and they hold each other, I think that that discribes their realtionship perfectly. They both not only needed to take care of someone else but they each wanted someone to take care of them. All in all about the movie though I was left with mixed feelings, it wasn't just a story about Bobby Darin, though it wasn't a story about his relationship with Sandra. As well as not being just a movie, it was also a musical. Their were just to many themes going on through out for me to enjoy this completly. It's missing what it already had.

Yes i am sure they really did love each other. Yes, it was a troubled marriage but even their son Dodd says that that they were the loves of each others life. I think most of the conflict came from the fact that Sandra wanted a more settled family life whereas Bobby wanted to pack as much in to his short time as possible, and i took that she was crying on her wedding night because she felt that Bobby didn't know her and might not like the real her when he did get to know her.
However this is just my opinion so i may be wrong.

not that it really matters but they married in 1960 and that would make her 18.

I looked up Bobby Darin on Wikipedia, and it said that he and Sandra Dee got divorced and he remarried. Then he divorced his second wife right before he died. Even though this was left out of the movie, I'm kinda glad because I like the movie just the way it is.

If you read Dodd Darin's book "Dream Lovers: The magnificent shattered lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee", Sandra did actually have a similar situation on her wedding night with being reluctant to sleep with Bobby because she had years of sexual abuse from her step-father. I read the book a few years ago and remember it talking about that, and she was afraid to get intimate again because she was being molested by her step-father since she was about 8 or so. Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know thats why and if you ever get a chance, the book is AMAZING, especially if you want to really understand Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee better, both their personalities and their relationship.

Why did Bobby ask for Sandra to divorce him?
It seems to me that he had a good thing going.

I just watched Pat Boone doing the narration over the movie "State Fair" that both Pat and Bobby were in; in his commentary, Pat mentioned that Sandra was often on the set and that both Sandra and Bobby were quite affectionate.

I don't know a lot about the real relationship between Darin and Dee, but the impresison I got from this movie was that Darin was suffering from the "Warren Beatty Syndrome" where he used to always falls in love with whatever actress he was currently making a movie with. I get the impression that he got caught up in the onscreen romance between himself and Dee and convinced himself that he was really in love with her.

reply

Wrong. Dee was a raging alcoholic and Darin finally got fed up with it. THAT's why he left her.

Actually, Bobby thought up excuses to leave her; he did so before in 1963 when he convinced himself that she had fallen in love with Peter Fonda, her co-star in "Tammy And The Doctor". It wasn't true, but with his shortened life span looming over him, he often acted impulsively. Sandra's alcoholism was part of the problem in the marriage (as was her eating disorder), but Bobby's behavior was also an issue. He would walk out on her just as she was at her happiest, when she thought everything was going great. Sandra suffered a total of six miscarriages (one after the divorce) and Bobby continued to come back to her after the divorce, until that final miscarriage when Sandra decided that they would no longer be intimate unless he committed to her. He refused her ultimatum and that was that.

Their relationship was far more complicated than was depicted in the film. Dodd Darin's book Dream Lovers goes into more detail than this movie or other books.

I read Dodd's and his mom's autobiography nearly 10 years ago. Both were excellent. I did not know Sandra had multiple miscarriages. I felt a younger actor should have played Bobby in his teen and early 20 years. But maybe the budget was tight.

Well, Sandra Dee after the divorce, she remained in love with him and never remarried. That's a sign of true love
