Is there some meaning behind the different hairstyles the people in the film have - some are bald, others have a knot of hair, etc, or is it just arbitrary?

Well for example notice Hattori wore a topknot in his memories, this represented his standing as a samurai, however he stopped wearing a topknot when he became a Ronin. If you follow what I'm saying.
