Yes - well said. The same is true of the red cane sword and the "disconnect" with the villagers and "good guys" in Beat's version. I feel he has done an admirable job presenting a "new" Zatoichi while respecting Shintaro Katsu.
shareIf you watch the special features with subs., he explains a lot about the new zatoichi. I love this movie. We see a lot of blood, the action scenes were very well staged, unlike the old zatoichi, which I also love btw, but the new Zatoichi is my fav!
shareNevertheless, as I'm watching the old series, I'm infatuated with them. I liked the new Zatoichi, too, though.
"He said he was greater than God. No one is."
Takeshi wanted to add elements to create something different than what was done with Shintaro Katsu, but keeping the primary elements intact.
shareI read somewhere that it was a means of modernizing the character. It's just stylization. It also had something to do with creating a 3-color palette for Ichi: blue clothing, red sword, and yellow hair.

You want more mysterious? I'll just try and think, "Where the hell's the whiskey?"
