::Spoiler::About the geisha...ahem..you know which one

Daigorô Tachibana, the guy who played the boy-geisha is a celebrity in Japan because he's particularly good at playing women's roles. Did anyone else think that his face seemed to be more manly in some scenes (like when they were in the tub) than in others and I wonder if he grew up some during the making of the movie. Did anyone else notice this?

:::::SPOILERS::::::

I must admit I felt very strange as this guy shows up for the very first time in the movie because his voice was so masculine and also his face wasn't completely equal to that of a woman... so I thought what's wrong with the other 2 masculine protagonists accepting the "geisha"'s offer.

I really didn't believe she was a he until I read about him here @ imdb.com. Alright, so he plays a geisha. But then again, I wasn't that surprised when Jaye Davidson's character turned out to be a guy at Crying Game. The arms were a dead give away. I thought, That can't be a woman. No woman, even a muscular one, has arms like those. A bit too hairy.

They both look very sexy! even the young versions do! ;-)

It is well known that he was around 16 when shooting first began, but I think turned 17 during filming. He is very attractive, and there is a sad point to this character in the film. That we are meant to know he is gay and transvestite, will grow into a confused man in his society, and we see that reflected in what's-his-face who bathes with the boy and asks him how he makes himself look womanish. It's a deep statement!

First scene, when they approach Zatoichi for 'sexytime', I knew it was a dude.

How can anyone seriously think he was a woman? Didn't look like a woman at all.

I think it was a wink and a nod to the audience, who are supposed to know that this sister is indeed a man. If they really wanted a man who looked like a woman for the film they would have just used a woman and had some revelation during the movie that she was indeed a man.

Normal female actresses are seldom believable as transsexuals and cross-dressers. Felicity Huffman in Transamerica was a rare exception. Best is to cast an actual TS or CD actress. There aren't a lot of them but there are definitely some good ones. I bet some are even Japanese.

I particularly liked that his character decided that he preferred his new gender and the others just shrugged it off.

The less painted his sister was, the more obvious it was that he was a fake in contrast. When they were both painted up they looked doll-like and could be confused for two women, but when she went without the makeup her natural femininity made his artificiality seem more vulgar imo.

Do you realize that "retard" spelled backwards is "drater"? Just some food for thought.

This is an example of "bishonen" meaning "beautiful youth (boy)" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bish%C5%8Dnen). It has roots in ancient Japanese literature and is often seen in manga. I thought he looked different from his sister, but didn't really think of it that much.
