That woman is Hattori Genosuke's wife (the bodyguard that get's killed by Zatoichi). She had a terminal illness which required an expensive treatment. Hattori goes from town to town working as a bodyguard risking his life in order to afford the medecines his wife needs to relieve the pain.

His wife never aproved of this, as it was a dangerous line of work for Hattori. Nevertheless she needed the medecines.

IMO Hattori's wife realizes Hattori is not coming back and nobody will take care of her now her husband is dead. In order to spare days/weeks of agony, she performs the seppuku (she digs a knife on her tummy), a common ritualistic way to commit suicide back in the time.

I actually don't think that her death was self-motivated; she hated that her husband fought so that she may live. Hence, I think she took her own life so that he would stop feeling he had to kill for her.

Which, of course, was a moot point because her husband died the same night, so the gesture was a night too late to save him.

i agree with you..
she just didnt want him to kill and get hurt just for her

I saw it that she was so unhappy he had to kill people all the time and killed herself in order to spare HIM. I also saw it that she had no idea he had been killed, which is sad.

Nope, her illness wasn't terminal. It was treatable, but the only way to get money for treatment was for him to work as a bodyguard.

She was growing increasingly upset that he was slaughtering tons of people for her sake. The first time he comes back, she says, "You've had to kill again." and she sounds upset about it. The next time he goes out on an assignment, you see her face with a tear trickling down her face.

It's obvious that she doesn't like the fact that he has kill people just so she can get better, so she kills herself so he doesn't have to do that anymore.

Tuberculosis in Edo period is terminal. Whatever she's taking was just balm for the soul.
