How do you classify Kill Bill as a samurai movie? 'Cause it has katanas in it? So does Matrix Reloaded, does that count?

If ANYTHING (and I wouldnt even go so far as to say this) it's more of a ninja movie than a samurai movie. If not just for the presence of Sonny Chiba's Hattori Hanzo (who was a REAL ninja, circa 1700s I think), then for some of the swordfighting that seems more ninja-esque than samurai inspired. And also he various uses of Haragei-like techinique. But I wouldnt go so far as to say anything in this movie REALLY implies ninjutsu as source material.
The second movie has a lot more to do with spagetti western and Yuen Wo Ping style Hong-Kong cinema than japanese samurai or ninja movies.
Just to make this clear, samurai was the name given to feudal japanese formal army men, versed in the various arts of war, which included, among others, lancers, archers, spies (shinobi, or ninja) and, of course, swordsmen.
shareThe real Hattori Hanzo was born in 1541. And you're right, Kill Bill's more of a spaghetti Western. Actually, Tarantino has said in an interview that Kil Bill Vol 1 and 2 has elements of various types of film he wanted to make, all wrapped up in one. Or two. Whatever, you get the point.

Agreed, although she is not a samurai when we meet her anymore, she is a ronin, bent on killing her former master no less, a crime punishable by death of your whole family and everyone you have ever associated with by the most horrible of deaths, that by invisible ninja, in feudal Japan (not so far back really, ended only about 150 years ago). So Bill, according to Japan's samurai law, was really in the right when he "murdered" her, and she was completely in the wrong throughout the film. Of course, the "rules" the Shoguns imposed on the populace were ridiculous, including the above, so she was in the wrong only as far as "law" was concerned, not morals or ethics.
The film is also a kung fu film, it can be classified as many types of films, why argue, you either are able to accept differences in film-makers styles and like something, or you are bent on some idea on what something should be like and you don't give anything a chance (make a movie yourself in that case).

If you mean that it must be Japanese made to be a samurai movie, or that it must be from the samurai time period, then you're right, but otherwise, Kill Bill is all samurai movie, as the protagonist is an expert, a true trained samurai, and now a ronin. What more could you ask for? Oh, have I mentioned that it is full of samurai lore and battles with proper samurai techniques?
If Quinton did anything right, it is with Kill Bill, he really does pay incredible homage to samurai movies from the past, and present, coming from Japan, and I know plenty of Japanese who are blown away by Kill Bill, especially Vol 1.

I like Sanjuro more than I like Yojimbo, even though the latter has Nakadai Tatsuya as the craaazy gunman.
