Confused by scene (spoilers)

I did not understand the gambling house slaughter (ie: starting with zatoichi cutting off the guy's arm). The guy was cheating so Zatoichi chopped the guy's arm off? kind of an overreaction wasn't it? Or was there more to the scene than I'm seeing. Or did Zatoichi think, there's no way to get out of this situation without killing all of them?

Or was this part of his plan to eliminate the Ginzo gang?

Like you said. He was probably out to get them.

And i wouldn't say he was even overreacting. Those people probably had ruined countless lives by cheating and were murderous bastards so they pretty much had what was coming to them.

Kitano is on record as saying that Zatoichi is not the hero of this film. He's not necessarily the good guy.

Ichi was just probably looking for an excuse to kill them after hearing Aunt's story.
