Modern samurai movies?
are there any modern sword fighting movies like this one?
shareI'm probably going to be slapped by someone here for this, but you can see Tom Cruise as a samurai in Last Samurai, or Forrest Whitaker as a samurai in Ghost Dog. Yea, I need some recommendations also

slap x 2
"when then last sword is drawn"
"Twilight Samurai"
"hidden blade" (havent seen it but it has good rating, if thats anything to go by)
"samurai fiction" (although its kind of a parody...ish, still worth a watch)
"shinobi" is also modern although i havent seen it and judging by the title i would have to say its probably about ninjas :P
Hello again, Gypsy-Catcher, we talked on the board for the other Last Samurai, the 1974 Kenji Misume one.
Here's a link to a list I did of some of my favourites, on the Gohatto board; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213682/board/flat/37154810?p=3&d=8394 %207038#83947038 , to which you might add Gohatto itself, provided you are reasonably open-minded. Enjoy!
(Additional) Yes, Shinobi is about ninja, but I was rather disappointed, it's more like a Chinese martial-arts movie, full of wire-flying and heroes with special powers, than a look at what shinobi, or ninja, were really like and how they worked. If anyone knows of a film that explores this, I'd be very happy to hear of it.

nice to see you again sazume-san
as far as ninja movies go, i have heard good things about shinobi no mono. supposedly it was one of the first "real" ninja movies in japan. although i cannot vouch for this as i have not actually seen it yet. this may be what your looking for. good luck
Oh yes, I've looked that up and it sounds like the sort of thing I want. Now to try and find it! Thanks for the tip, Gypsy-catcher. (What does your ID mean, btw? Just curious.)

If you're into more action orientated stuff, maybe azumi & azumi 2?
shareThanks, ham4, but no, not really. I like the sort of film that gives a realistic, or seemingly realistic, picture of life in another culture. So Yoji Yamada's trilogy is more my sort of thing. I wish he would do a shinobi one!

glad to be of a help. MF stands for metal face. its a reference to Dr.doom and the rapper MF Doom.
the gypsy catcher is a reference to 19th century european prejudices...no im just kidding i just thought it sounded funny :)
The answer is NO, no modern movies like this one, and no older ones except the original "Zatoichi" film series. But I can give you tips from my favorites:
The best blind swordfighter film you would like is "Blind Fury" (1990, starring Rutger Hauer). This was the original American remake of "Zatoichi" episode #17.
The best modern samurai film without blind people is-- most recently--"Shogun". Believe it or don't.
The best jidai-geki of all time is "Onmyoji", followed by a miserable sequel called "Onmyoji II". If you get it-- and you should-- don't get the second one, so be sure you order it by the name "ONMYOJI I". This film is set in the Heian Period.
The crummiest rip-off of the blind swordsman of all time I think is called "White Tiger", a miserably inaccurate Chinese offering from a few years back. Better than the ridiculous "Ghost Dog", though.
The best blind man movie is "DareDevil" with Ben Affleck-- go ahead and laugh, ye of little faith! It has martial arts!

Not exactly modern, is it? And all that sugar is bad for your teeth.

now now, no need to knock The Last Samurai. It did have Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada in it. Tom Cruise, however, was an unneeded addition. bleh.
"First to Fight, Last to Leave" United States Marine Corps!
Oo-Rah
Twilight Samurai
Hidden Blade
The anime series Samurai Champloo
Lady Snowblood (not so modern)
13 Assassins
so many movies, so little time
