Bruno Ganz DESERVED the Oscar for Best (Lead) Actor!

A most astounding performance. He obviously put a lot of preparation into the role of Hitler and got everything spot-on, from the accent, to the mannerisms, physicality and volatility of his character. My No.1 male perf. of the century (yes, even DDL in There Will Be Blood doesn't hold up to him).
Shame he wasn't eligible for a nomination, in a year where there were so many brilliant portrayals of real-life people (by DiCaprio, Cheadle, Foxx, Bardem).

To be eligible, doesn't the film have to have been in English?

No. Javier Bardem was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role six years later for Biutiful, which is entirely in Spanish.

Not only that, it should have won best movie and best director awards. It's the best movie that year along with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The Oscars are a bad joke.

"Downfall" definitely deserved an Oscar for "Best Foreign Language Film", but did not win that either, although it was nominated.

I think the Oscars are restricted to English language films, hence the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar award set up.

How did "Downfall" fare at Cannes I wonder.

I agree that that was one of the best performances I've ever seen. A much stronger performance than Cheadle's in Hotel Rwanda and DiCaprio's in The Aviator. (I haven't seen Ray or Million Dollar Baby.)

Especially memorable during his explosions of anger and disgust, raving about how all the generals and the SS had been deceiving him and were cowards and traitors for disobeying his orders.
