English DVD

does anybody know if the UK DVD of the anime is uncut? i've looked on the bbfc website, but cannot find it on there.
i don't know how violent the anime is, so i don't know if it's likely to be cut, but i want to know before i buy it.

The anime is pretty violent, but I'm not sure if it's worth it cut or uncut. If it's cut, the only thing you would be missing is more shoddy animation. There's some rather pointless sex scenes, and some fight scenes, but it's laughable because the animation is so poor that the effect is lost. Seriously, the animation is very poor, it's not even worth it to see it. It contributes nothing other than the novelty of hearing Takashi Miike do the voice of Kakihara, and that's only for a brief bit.

I watched this yesterday and have to totally disagree with you. I think this is very good and am very glad I bought it.
I don't know how familiar you are with anime, but the animation on this is perfectly fine, infact, I thought it was pretty cool in places. the animation easily compares with a lot of more well known stuff realised by manga entertainment.
also there is more value to the film than just miike's cameo, the story is very good and ties into the film pretty well and expands the character of ichi.

Actually, I'm an anime buff, and I have to say that I don't know what you are watching but this anime does not hold a candle to some of the best stuff being released. Manga Entertainment is not the end-all-be-all of anime, in fact a great deal of what Manga releases does not even scratch the surface. Maybe I'm biased because my favorite animes are the high-budget films like "Akira," "Ghost in the Shell," "Armitage III," "Spirited Away," "Perfect Blue," "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust," "Blood: The Last Vampire," "Jin-Roh," all the anime that had a considerable amount of money behind them. Perhaps "Koroshiya-0" compares to the lower end anime like "Sailor Moon" or "Dragonball Z," but quite frankly I'm a snob and I expected something that at least used more than the same three frames for each motion.
As for the story, it just didn't strike me as anything interesting. There was some element of mystery to Miike's film, the sense of uncertainty as to what was real and what ws hypnotized. Even when Jijii explained Ichi's past, you didn't see most of it, you only saw what he thought he remembered. And Jijii is a master of manipulation, how do we know that what he is telling Karen is the truth? She seems to be hypnotized by him, but he says that he hasn't hypnotized her. How can we believe anything Jijii has said? While there is some value to finally having the real story and seeing and hearing Ichi's past, I think there's a lot more value in keeping it a mystery. There's something to be said fo the uncertainty of whether or not Ichi is a victim or was always just screwed up from the start. "Koroshiya-0" was interesting for a moment, but by the end I was very dissatisfied. And Miike's cameo as Kakihara didn't seem impressive either since all he basically did was scream.

This is just my opinion though, so if you like it, good for you. I'm glad somebody enjoys it, because I certainly didn't. It's just my opinion.

lol, in Manga Enterianment release are usually the stuff no-one else wants "not always" but usually. I suggest you have a look at some of ADV's releases like Full Metal Panic and compare the animation. Even some of there older ones like Nadesico and Evangelion have miles better animation.

Eitherway I loved the live-action Ichi but really while this is only my opinion the anime was pretty trashy I'll be selling it right away glad they put the japanese language on there aswell cuz' the dub sucked bad aswell another thing they have in common with Manga Entertainment.

So, what you're saying is that you didn't like this anime because you didn't want to know the back-story to the original live-action film, and felt that it was better left as a mystery? Surely you knew what this was about, prior to watching it. Seems that you could have solved your own gripe by simply not watching it in the first place.

The animation in Ichi is on a par with Ghost in the Shell and Akira (remasterd), and exceeds Perfect Blue

You MUST have seen a different version to the one I (and yucel81x) saw. I've just watched a UK DVD version I picked up at Virgin, and the animation isn't a patch on those three films, not even in the same league.

Which Vampire Hunter D are we talking about? 'Cuz the new one "Bloodlust" is some amazing animation. The one in the '80s...crappy. "Bloodlust," incredibly good. And "Perfect Blue" is still way better animation-wise than "Koroshiya-1: Episode 0."

just watched it. i'd heard about this film called ichi the killer and how cool it was, but thats all i knew so i rented this manga version thinking it was the proper film! oops. yeah, the fact that it only goes for 46 minutes kinda says it all, it looks like made for tv animation, which is fine for tv but i'd never compare it to any of the real feature length films like akira and ghost in the shell that have already been mentioned. cute it may be, but nothing serious. can't wait to watch the real live action feature though!

You're an opinionated knob aren't you? He's allowed to have his own opinion.

Including that disclaimer in no way makes it OK for you to lecture him on why he's wrong to have a different opinion.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the quality of the actual animation in that line.

Presenting reasons why you liked or disliked something is better than saying "it blows/rocks and you're an idiot if you love/hate it."

Yes, it is uncut. Unlike the live-action version

Whichever way you look at it, it's a fairly pointless exercise if you've seen either of the live action movies or read the comics.
The animation is up to the standard of kids tv, but doesn't even remotely approach Vampire Hunter D or the other more adult material that's finally reaching a wider western audience.
The English dubbing is eerily reminiscent of The Woodentops and Hector's House.

Can anyone tell me if this adds to the story of Ichi the Killer or Ichi - 1? That is the only reason I am interested. The film story leaves out a lot I want to know. I just like knowing the whole story to everything. It's like an obsesive compulsive disorder. I heard there are even comics that go along with the series. Can anyone verify that for me?

reply

Yep, it's all based on manga. Search the web for the translated version. Well worth it.
