What did the boy symbolize?

Can someone explain to me what the boy she saw in the film meant?
I never understood that part of it.

That was the only thing I could think of, as well, but thought she had not been with Elliott that long or that the abortion had not happened long enough ago for the aborted child to be that old - but I think you are right - it's the only answer that makes sense.

Thanks Jsansarowar.

I thought it represented her childhood - that is, going by the kid's facial expression, her angry childhood concerning how she was overly-controlled (she exploded about it at the women's group meeting) - and her realizing she has become just like that again with the neighbor controlling her in a similar way (prisoner to the noise, etc.).

I thought it was a nightmare that she had an abortion. An abortion without her partner's consent, obviously, which resulted in their separation and divorce. She was an unbalanced woman and had the abortion to spite her husband; now she's haunted by it.

I agree. Hank's analysis of her was spot on. She only thinks about herself.

I saw that the boy was trying to smile at her and Joyce was in a bad mood and just decided to stare him down until he stopped smiling.
